THE ANNOUNCEMENTS
NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Genesis 11:1–9; Acts 2:1–21, 36–41; John 14:23–31.
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . The Spirit of Truth bears witness to Jesus, who is the truth. But the world does not receive the truth. It loves its own and hates those who are of the truth. Just as Jesus was scorned, so is His Church. “The hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God” (John 16:2). Yet it is by Jesus’ suffering and death that we are saved. Therefore we rejoice to share in His sufferings, that we may also share in His resurrection glory (1 Pet. 4:7–14). Through the ministry of the Spirit of Truth, we are cleansed from the deceit of our idols and given a new heart and a new spirit, the heart and Spirit of Christ (Ezek. 36:22–28). He now works in us fervent, self-giving love for one another, love which covers a multitude of sins, “that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen” (1 Pet. 4:11).
THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . 1 Peter 4:10—“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” God’s grace is His undeserved mercy toward us. And what do we have that is not a gift flowing from God’s grace? He means for us to use all these gifts in service toward one another. And chief among the ways we serve one another is to support the Church’s work of bringing more of God’s grace to more of God’s people. And that’s what it means to be a steward!
ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Wayne and Janice Arthur to the glory of God in thanksgiving for the birth of their healthy new great grandson, Dawson Lee Lowe.
MEMBERS OF THE 2018 CONFIRMATION CLASS ARE . . . Regann Bowles; Oliver Braaten, Isaak Burgener, and Cailin Munson. Next week is Confirmation Sunday (May 20). In lieu of Bible Class and Sunday School next week, there will be a reception in the Fellowship Hall.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS . . . Joshua Schiff, our adopted seminary student, and his family will be visiting Immanuel May 26–27. Joshua will be preaching that Sunday during the Divine Service. We’ll hear more about his studies and life at the seminary during Bible Class at 10:30, then a potluck will be held at 12:00 so we have an opportunity to talk more with Joshua and his family.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS . . . Immanuel’s Vacation Bible School is set for Monday, June 11–Friday, June 15, 9:00 am–11:00 am.
THE CAMP CILCA HOG ROAST . . . is scheduled for Sunday, May 27, 2018, from 11:30–2:30. Pulled pork sandwiches, sides, drinks, and desserts will be served for $8 per adult, $5 per child (4–12). A worship service will be held at 10:30 am in the Indoor Chapel. Come for the day or camp out for a whole weekend of swimming, games, devotions, and friends.
PEORIA BACH FESTIVAL . . . will be held June 1–10, 2018. Information about this year’s festival can be found on Immanuel’s bulletin board, as well as calling (309) 676-4609 or visiting www.peoriabachfestival.org.
WE’RE LOOKING FOR TEACHERS . . . Lutheran Special Education Ministries is seeking a teacher to fill a part-time position at Concordia Lutheran School, Peoria, Illinois. Candidates should have Special Education Certification, or be actively working toward the certification. We will also consider candidates who have special education experience and those with Elementary Certification who have a desire to work with students who have learning needs. If you are interested, please call Lutheran Special Education Ministries at 248-419-3390, or Rich Schumacher at 734-748-5253 for more information and to obtain an application.
“THE TESTIMONY OF GOD IS GREATER” (1 JOHN 5:9A) . . . like a mother’s reassurances counteracting the bully’s ridicule. “His Word is truth” (John 17:17), like a mother’s comforting correcting emotional assumptions. The world’s abortive ways say, “You can’t endure.” The Son of God says, “I will undertake for you.” The devil’s suicidal deceptions say, “Take control.” The Son of God says, “Trust me.” The sinful flesh says, “No, the burden’s too heavy.” The Son of God says, “Yes, the blessing is abundant!” Holy Father, sanctify our lives and our neighbors in the testimony of Your truth. Amen.
A PRAYER FOR PURITY . . . Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden, cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit that we may perfectly love You and worthily magnify Your holy name; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
