THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Genesis 4:1–15; 1 Cor 15:1–10; Luke 18:9–14.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . Our Lord wept over Jerusalem for the destruction that would soon come upon her. For she did not recognize the time of God’s visitation in Christ, who had come to bring her peace (Luke 19:41–48). Through His prophets God had consistently called His people to turn from their deceit and false worship. “But My people do not know the judgments of the Lord” (Jer. 8:4–12). They sought to establish their own righteousness rather than receive Christ’s righteousness through faith (Rom. 9:30–10:4). So it was that God was in His temple to cleanse it, a precursor to the once-for-all cleansing from sin which He would accomplish in the temple of His own body on the cross. God grant us to know the things that make for our peace—His visitation in the Word and Sacraments—that by the Holy Spirit we may penitently confess “Jesus is Lord” (1 Cor. 12:1–11).

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” Here is the key to faithful stewardship—and a faithful life in general! God’s Law is not given to us to hamper our fun, but to show us God’s own wisdom. All things being equal, won’t a life lived in accordance with God’s Word be more fulfilling and satisfying than a life lived at odds with God’s Word? Doesn’t He know better than we?

THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Joan Rahn & Family to the glory of God on the occasion of Duane Rahn’s birthday.

PASTOR IS AWAY . . . on vacation August 18–August 31. If you have an emergency, you may contact him on his mobile phone (217) 460-2077, or contact one of the Elders.

MANY THANKS TO . . . Rev. Adam Jacobsen from St John Lutheran Church, Mattoon, Illinois, for serving in the Divine Service and teaching Bible Class while Pastor is away on vacation.

PEACE MEALS . . . August is Immanuel’s month to deliver Peace Meals. Peace Meals delivers Monday–Thursday, beginning at 11:00 am. Team up with someone from church to help get these low-cost, nutritious meals to those in need. Please contact Roger & Wanda Long to volunteer.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS NEEDED . . . for the 2014–2015 Academic Year. If you are willing to teach for one, two, or three months out of the year, please contact Pastor Braaten. We still need one teacher for the 4th–6th grade class. If this position is not filled, those grades will not have Sunday School. Rally Day for Sunday School is on Sunday, September 7, and classes begin on Sunday, September 14.

THERE ARE STILL . . . openings to put flowers on the Altar. Please sign up on the bulletin board in the hallway by the sanctuary or call the church office. Flowers are $30.00 and can be special ordered. Flowers can be taken home after the Sunday’s service.

CAMP CILCA GOLF OUTING . . . Come and enjoy a relaxing round of golf with your friends in support of Camp CILCA, the CID’s Lutheran Camp. The format is a scramble. So organize your own team of four or just come and be put on a team. The cost is $50.00 and that covers your golf, cart, meal, and prizes. The outing is at The Rail (Springfield, Illinois) on Friday, September 19, 1:00 pm. Contact Pastor Daniel Smith for details or to register (pastordan@grics.net).

TAKE IT IF YOU WANT IT . . . There are several items found during the church clean-up day that the church no longer uses. They’re in the kitchen along the North wall. Take a look and help yourselves. Whatever isn’t taken will be sold in the Spring garage sale to help the Youth Group attend the Higher Things Youth Conference in July 2015.
