THE ANNOUNCEMENTS
NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Genesis 2:7–17; Romans 6:19–23; Mark 8:1–9.
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . “Unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matt 5:20). God demands nothing less than perfection and holiness from you in regard to His commandments (Ex. 20:1–17). Your only hope, then, is not in your own goodness but in the goodness of Christ, who did not come to destroy the Law and the Prophets, but to fulfill them for you. In Christ, your righteousness does indeed exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees. For you have been baptized into Christ’s death and your sinful nature crucified. Therefore, he who has died has been freed from sin (Rom. 6:1–11). You are now raised with Christ to walk in newness of life and to share in His resurrection on the Last Day. Christ has brought you through the baptismal sea “out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery” (Ex. 20:2). Therefore, “consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 6:11).
THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Matthew 5:24 “First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” Our giving to the Lord’s work is part of our wider Christian life. The Lord wants us to walk in His ways in all we do—He wants our hearts united to His. It’s not our gift the Lord wants—it is our very selves in all we think, say, and do.
THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Pastor & Lauren Braaten in thanksgiving for the blessings received from the generosity and love of the members at Immanuel on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of his installation here as pastor.
PEACE MEALS . . . August is Immanuel’s month to deliver Peace Meals. Peace Meals delivers Monday–Thursday, beginning at 11:00 am. Team up with someone from church to help get these low-cost, nutritious meals to those in need. Please contact Roger & Wanda Long to volunteer.
BI-MONTHLY MISSION . . . is Sunday, August 3. All loose cash in the offering will go to SAM Pantry. SAM (Social Action Ministry) food pantry is a ministry of TUMC that serves families all over Douglas County. Unfortunately, in today’s economic environment, people are having to make choices about buying food or paying utility bills or medical bills. The SAM food pantry exists to make that choice a little easier. Staffed by a number of the community churches (including members from Immanuel), patrons receive a supply of food, no more often than once a month, appropriate to the number of persons in their home.
CHURCH CLEAN-UP DAY . . . will be Saturday, August 16, 8:00 am3:00 pm. We will be cleaning up some of the outside, washing windows, organizing and cleaning the kitchen, classrooms, offices, and sanctuary. Lunch will be provided. So mark your calendars and bring your work gloves and tool boxes.
THANK YOU . . . so very much for your generous donation. They are truly appreciated. Sincerely, BETHs Place.
ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH . . . in rural Mattoon (Dorans) will be hosting their annual Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, August 6, 4:30 pm–7:00 pm. A free-will offering will be taken with matching funds provided by Thrivent Financial. All proceeds will go to Rising Phoenix of Charleston.
SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS NEEDED . . . for the 2014–2015 Academic Year. If you are willing to teach for one, two, or three months out of the year, please contact Pastor Braaten. We are in need of three teachers. If these positions are not filled those grades will not have Sunday School.
COME TO THE ALL CHURCH PICNIC . . . on Sunday, August 3, 2014, 3:00 pm6:00 pm. The Men’s Club is frying fish. The Board of Mission & Evangelism is providing hot dogs and hamburgers. Come with a side dish or a dessert to pass. We will be eating at 4:00 pm. Our Seminary Adopt-A-Student, Dustin Fry, will be with us that morning to preach during the Divine Service and will be staying for the church picnic to mingle and get to know you all better. Come out to meet him and enjoy the food and camaraderie that our Lord gives in the family of His church.
