THE ANNOUNCEMENTS
NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Genesis 1:1–2:3; Ephesians 6:10–17; John 4:46–54
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . The Holy Spirit sounds forth the Gospel call: “See, I have prepared my dinner . . . Come to the wedding feast” (Matt. 22:1–14). But many reject this invitation in favor of worldly pursuits. And so the call goes out to others, both the good and the bad. For the wedding invitation is not based on the qualifications of those invited but on the basis of the merits and work of Christ. The feast is free: “He who has no money, come, buy and eat . . . delight yourselves in rich food.” (Is. 55:1–9). Those rejecting the Spirit’s work shall experience God’s wrath and judgment. Those who are not clothed in Christ’s righteousness shall be cast into outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Let us therefore seek the Lord while He may be found, for He will have mercy upon us. Let us redeem the time, being filled with the Spirit, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Eph 5:15–21).
THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Isaiah 55:2 “Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?” What Isaiah says here is reminiscent of what Jesus says about putting our earthly wealth in places where “moth and rust destroy.” Where we put the money God has given us to manage says a lot how we actually view life. What do your spending priorities say about what you think is truly important in life?
OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE CHRIST’S LOVE WITH INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS . . . You have the opportunity to be part of sharing Christ’s love and friendship with some of the 10,000 international students at the U of I. Join Sue Hasselbring, Ministry Catalyst of International Student Ministries (an LCMS RSO), for an informational and planning meeting on how C-U area congregations can be involved in sharing Christ’s love with these students. We’ll meet at 2 pm on Sunday, October 13 at University Lutheran Church, 604 E Chalmers St, Champaign. Parking is free on Sundays and available in lots and street spaces around the church.
REFORMATION PARTY COMING SOON! . . . Please plan to join us on Sunday, October 27 at 5:00 pm. There will be grilled brats and other German food, as well as hymn singing, trivia, and games for the kids. Watch the Narthex for food sign-ups. Don’t forget to bring a friend!
JOHN’S GERMAN MEAL . . . Monday, Oct. 14, 4:30-7 at St. John’s, rural Bath. Proceeds from this meal will help support mission work among the deaf in the Central Illinois District. The menu will include: Schnitzel, Spaetzle, Bratwurst, German Potato Salad, Sauerkraut and Root Beer all for a donation of your choice.
PLEASE WELCOME NEXT WEEK . . . Seminarian Nicholas Sinatra and his wife, Joselyn, whom Immanuel has adopted to support this year. He will be visiting us next weekend and preaching at both the Saturday night and the Sunday morning Divine Services.
