THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Proverbs 25:6–14; Ephesians 4:1–6; Luke 14:1–11.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . A large funeral procession carrying the only son of a widow is confronted by another large procession, Jesus and His followers. Death and Life meet face to face at the gate of the city (Luke 7:11–17). Filled with compassion, Jesus comes into direct contact with our mortality in order to overcome it. He touches the coffin and speaks His creative words of life, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” Jesus does what is neither expected nor requested. For through Christ, God the Father “is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think” (Eph. 3:14–21). Jesus bore our death in His body that we may share in His resurrection. Even as Elijah stretched himself out three times over the Zarephath woman’s son (2 Kings 17:17–24), God stretched Himself out over us in the threefold application of His name in the baptismal water, breathing new and everlasting life into us. “To Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Ephesians 3:14–15 “For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.” We have a Father in heaven. He cares for us. He knows how to give us all good things, beginning with our salvation in Christ Jesus. This knowledge frees us from worry and anxiety. Jesus returned to this theme again and again, and we should take Him at His Word.

THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . were given by Dorothy Hostetler to the glory of God in memory of Reuben Hostetler.

OCTOBER BI-MONTHLY MISSION . . . is Sunday, October 1. October’s bi-monthly offering has been designated for CID Campus Ministries (given to one campus ministry per year on a rotation). This year’s offering will be given Wittenberg Lutheran Center at Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois. Checks may be made out to Immanuel Lutheran Church. An envelope will be placed in your member mailbox for your convenience. Your generosity is truly appreciated.

THE OCTOBER CALENDAR . . . with events, birthdays, and anniversaries is now available on the table across from the church mailboxes.

COME TO BIBLE CLASS . . . it is a perfect opportunity for older members to model ongoing Christian Education for the younger members as St. Paul instructs the older men and older women to do in Titus Chapter 2. We are studying the Wisdom of God found in the Book of Proverbs. Who doesn’t need the Wisdom of God in their lives? Join us.

IMMANUEL CHURCH FAMILY PICNIC . . . is scheduled for Sunday, October 1 at 5:00 pm. in the Fellowship Hall.  Please join in on the fun and fellowship as we say Hello to fall and enjoy fried fish.  Please bring your favorite dish to share.  Thank you from the Missions and Evangelism Board.

DONATION . . . We have been contacted about a Yamaha baby grand piano that someone is looking to rehome. Marilyn Thomas is moving and would like to donate it to someone who is passionate about the instrument and can take proper care of it.  Her email address is marilyn16thomas@gmail.com
