THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . 1 Kings17:17–24; Ephesians 3:13–21; Luke 7:11–17.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . “You cannot serve God and money” (Matt. 6:24‑34), for they require two contrary forms of service. Worry is the worship given to the false god of mammon, an unbelieving anxiousness and focus on the things of this world. Faith is the worship of the true God, a confident trust that He is a loving Father who will care for all of our needs in both body and soul. The widow of Zarephath served God—that is, she believed the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah that the bin of flour would not be used up nor would the jar of oil run dry (1 Kings 17:8–16). He who feeds the birds and clothes the flowers will certainly provide for our daily needs. For He has already provided for our eternal needs, clothing us with Christ’s righteousness in Baptism and feeding us His body and blood for our forgiveness. With such confidence we are liberated from worry and freed to do good with our material resources, especially to those who are of the household of faith (Gal. 5:25–6:10).

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Matthew 6:25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on.” Our anxieties and fears all come down to one thing: worrying that we will not get our way. But God is our loving heavenly Father: He will always care for us and His will is always best. That confidence should set us free from worry and free us for service according to the callings God has given us.

THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . were given by Roger & Wanda Long to the glory of God on the occasions of their birthdays.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS . . . will be installed today, Sunday, September 9, during the Divine Service immediately following the offering.

SUNDAY SCHOOL RALLY DAY . . . is today, Sunday, September 9; activities begin at 10:30 am. Come and join in the celebration and surprise activities! Parents will have the opportunity to talk with Pastor Braaten and register the child(ren) for the 2018–2019 Sunday School year. Rally Day activities are held in lieu of Bible Classes this morning.

IMMANUEL’S CHURCH PICNIC . . . is also today, Sunday, September 9, 3:00–6:00 pm (eat at 4:00 pm). Hot dogs, hamburgers, and fried fish! Bring your favorite side dish or dessert to share. Come out and enjoy the food and camaraderie that our Lord gives in the family of His church.

A NEW BIBLE INFORMATION CLASS . . . will begin on September 16, 6:00 pm. All the main teachings of the Bible will be studied. If you know of someone who is interested in this class, perhaps a husband or wife, a neighbor, or someone from work, please invite them to attend. If you have not attended since confirmation or when you became a member, please consider joining us for some rewarding Bible study. For more information, contact Pastor.

LADIES OF IMMANUEL . . . you are invited to a baby shower for Bethany Campbell on Saturday, September 22, at 10:00 am here at the church hosted by Marissa Manor. Bethany is registered on Amazon. Regrets only to Marissa at mmanor17@gmail.com or 309-310-5915.

FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH, TUSCOLA . . . will be hosting a Red Cross blood drive on Friday, September 21, from 10:00 am–2:00 pm and would like to get at least 30 people pre-registered. Call 1-800-733-2767 or visit redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment. Information can be found on the flyers posted on both of Immanuel’s bulletin boards.

Jonathan Fisk and guest pastors (weekdays at 8:00 a.m. CT), hear from missionary Benjamin Helge on The Coffee Hour (9/12 at 9:15 a.m. CT), and begin studying the book of Colossians on Thy Strong Word (weekdays at 11:00 a.m. CT).
