THE ANNOUNCEMENTS
NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Genesis 2:7–17; Romans 6:19–23; Mark 8:1–9.
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . “Unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matt 5:20). God demands nothing less than perfection and holiness from you in regard to His commandments (Ex. 20:1–17). Your only hope, then, is not in your own goodness but in the goodness of Christ, who did not come to destroy the Law and the Prophets, but to fulfill them for you. In Christ, your righteousness does indeed exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees. For you have been baptized into Christ’s death and your sinful nature crucified. Therefore, he who has died has been freed from sin (Rom. 6:1–11). You are now raised with Christ to walk in newness of life and to share in His resurrection on the Last Day. Christ has brought you through the baptismal sea “out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery” (Ex. 20:2). Therefore, “consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 6:11).
THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Matthew 5:24 “First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” Our giving to the Lord’s work is part of our wider Christian life. The Lord wants us to walk in His ways in all we do—He wants our hearts united to His. It’s not our gift the Lord wants—it is our very selves in all we think, say, and do.
THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Corky & Theresa Fields to the glory of God on the occasion of their wedding anniversary.
OUR HEARTFELT THANKS . . . to Pastor Braaten and the members of Immanuel for the continued prayers, kind words, cards, food, and memorials during Joel’s illness and since his passing. We are truly grateful to you for all that you’ve done and for being there for us. Steve, Ann, and Jacob.
PASTOR BRAATEN WILL BE OUT OF THE OFFICE . . . July 25–28 presenting at the Institute on Liturgy, Preaching, and Church Music at Concordia University, Chicago. If you need assistance you may contact him on his mobile phone or call one of the Elders (Jack Appleby, Kenny Kresin, Greg Nau, or Bryce Reifsteck).
PEACE MEALS . . . August is Immanuel’s month to deliver Peace Meals. Peace Meals delivers Monday–Thursday, beginning at 11:00 am. Team up with someone from church to help get these low-cost, nutritious meals to those in need. Please contact Roger & Wanda Long to volunteer.
CIRCUIT CONVOCATION! . . . The Mattoon Circuit of the Central Illinois District is celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation at our first ever Circuit Convocation on Saturday, August 5, at Saint John Lutheran Church, Mattoon. The celebration begins with 9:00 am Divine Service and includes lunch, supper, and an opportunity for the congregations of the circuit to share how they are doing. The night winds up with a presentation on Luther sites in Germany. Please sign up in the back of the church or let Pastor Braaten know if you are planning to attend. Immanuel’s August 5 Saturday Evening Divine Service is canceled.
BI-MONTHLY MISSION . . . is Sunday, August 6, and will be going to SAM Pantry. An envelope designated for SAM Pantry has been placed in your mailbox. Thank you!
