THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Exodus 17:1–7; 1 Cor 9:24–10:5; Matthew 20:1–16.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . The Lord appeared to Moses in the light of the burning bush (Ex. 3:1–14). Later Moses’ face would shine with the light of God’s glory when he came down from Mount Sinai (Ex. 34:29–35). At the Transfiguration, Moses and Elijah appeared with the One who is the Light of Light Himself (Matt. 17:1–9). Jesus’ glory as God shines with brilliant splendor in and through His human nature. By this epiphany, our Lord confirmed the prophetic word (2 Pet. 1:16–21), revealing that He is the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. He manifested His majesty as the eternal Son of the Father, and He wonderfully foreshowed our adoption as sons (Collect). We who have been baptized into Christ’s body are given a glimpse of the glory that we will share with Him in the resurrection on the Last Day.

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Matthew 17:7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” When Jesus is with us, there is no need to fear. He loves us and cares for us and will never abandon us. That assurance is the basis of all generosity—for only those who are set free from worry can learn the joy of giving.

POINSETTIAS . . . If you forgot to take home your Christmas Poinsettia, they are in the kitchen on the counter.

PASTOR WILL BE AWAY . . . January 20–22 for the annual pastors’ conference at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana. If you need assistance you may contact him on his mobile phone or call one of the Elders (Ronald Legg, Greg Nau, Bryce Reifsteck, Mark Whitson).

MEN’S BIBLE STUDY . . . Today, January 17, 7:00 pm, at Bryce Reifsteck’s home (300 E. Van Allen Street), a new Men’s Bible Study will begin. We will meet monthly at someone’s home to talk about the Bible, Lutheran Theology, our vocations as husbands, fathers, sons, and workers, over good food and barley sodas. Bring your own favorite beverage and an appetizer to pass, plus your Bible.

LOOKING FORWARD TO SUNDAY BIBLE STUDY . . . Beginning on Wednesday, February 17, at 10:00 am, Pastor will offer a new weekly Bible Study looking at all the Propers (Introit, Gradual, Collect of the Day, and the Readings) for the coming Sunday. This will go into more depth on the things that don’t make it into the sermon. So if you’ve ever read or heard something in church from one of these readings and wondered more about it, this will be another opportunity, besides Sunday morning Bible Class, to explore it further.

FREE BINGO . . . at the Tuscola Senior Building, Thursday, January 21, after a menu of Turkey Pot Roast, Baked Beans, Winter Max Vegetables, Roll, and Peaches, at 11:30 am. The meal is for people over 60 for a donation of $3.50. Reservations must be made by 12:00 noon on Wednesday, January 20 by calling (217) 2532278.

A PRAYER FOR THE SICK . . . O Father of mercies and God of all comfort, our only help in time of need, look with favor upon Your servant name. Assure him/her of Your mercy, deliver him/her from the temptations of the evil one, and give him/her patience and comfort in his/her illness. If it please you, restore him/her to health, or give him/her grace to accept this tribulation with courage and hope; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
