THE ANNOUNCEMENTS
NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Exodus 17:1–7; 1 Cor 9:24–10:5; Matthew 20:1–16.
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . The Lord appeared to Moses in the light of the burning bush (Ex. 3:1–14). Later Moses’ face would shine with the light of God’s glory when he came down from Mount Sinai (Ex. 34:29–35). At the Transfiguration, Moses and Elijah appeared with the One who is the Light of Light Himself (Matt. 17:1–9). Jesus’ glory as God shines with brilliant splendor in and through His human nature. By this epiphany, our Lord confirmed the prophetic word (2 Pet. 1:16–21), revealing that He is the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. He manifested His majesty as the eternal Son of the Father, and He wonderfully foreshowed our adoption as sons (Collect). We who have been baptized into Christ’s body are given a glimpse of the glory that we will share with Him in the resurrection on the Last Day.
THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Matthew 17:7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” When Jesus is with us, there is no need to fear. He loves us and cares for us and will never abandon us. That assurance is the basis of all generosity—for only those who are set free from worry can learn the joy of giving.
ALTAR FLOWER CHART . . . There are still a number of openings available for altar flowers. Please check the chart in the hall and sign up if there is a special event you wish to honor. Flowers are $35. Thank you!
BI-MONTHLY MISSION FOR BETHS PLACE. . . is Sunday, February 4. For your convenience, an envelope designated for BETHS Place has been placed in your church mailbox. Checks are payable to Immanuel Lutheran Church. Thank you!
CAN YOU DICE AND CHOP? . . . Do you like stirring and sautéing? Are you a whiz at baking frozen pizzas? Want to be a blessing to someone in our congregation? Then grab your apron and mark your calendars for Saturday, February 10, at 9:00 AM in the church kitchen. We will be making freezer meals to take to some of our members as a way to bless them and show them that we care. This is a trial run to see if this is something we as a church family can do routinely when there is a need within the congregation. The LWML has graciously donated seed money to start this endeavor, and we are very grateful. No experience in the kitchen required; however, we may ask you to help with the dishes. Please continue to watch the bulletin for more information and contact Leigh Ann Whitson or Lauren Braaten with any questions.
YOUTH GROUP . . . will not meet on Sunday, January 28, but instead meet on Sunday, February 4, at St. John, Mattoon, 5:00 pm—9:30 pm, for a Circuit-wide Youth Group Super Bowl Party. We’ll leave the church’s East parking lot at 4:30 pm.
LENTEN MIDWEEK SUPPERS . . . will be served this year before the Midweek services. Serving time will be 5:30 pm–6:45 pm. Ash Wednesday is typically the most well-attended; we invite the congregation to bring a dish to pass. The serving schedule is as follows:
- Wed, Feb 14 — Congregational Potluck
- Wed, Feb 21 — Boards of Stewardship & Trustees
- Wed, Feb 28 — LWML
