THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Isaiah 29:17–24; 2 Corinthians 3:4–11; Mark 7:31–37.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . “And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard” (Gen. 4:1–15). For unlike Abel, Cain’s offering did not proceed from a heart that revered and trusted in the Lord. Thus, the lowly tax collector who prayed, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” was the one who went down to his house justified before God, not the respectable, outwardly righteous Pharisee who trusted in himself and his own good living (Luke 18:9–14). “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Eph. 2:1–10). The one who penitently despairs of his own righteousness and relies completely on the atoning mercy of God in Christ is the one who is declared righteous. For Christ died for our sins and rose again the third day (1 Cor. 15:1–10). Therefore, “everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Luke 18:11-12 “The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’” The Pharisees got so much right and so much wrong. It’s a good thing for this Pharisee to be faithful to his wife and faithful in his giving to the Lord’s work, but none of it is of any avail if it proceeds from a prideful heart!

THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Glen & Janet Stumeier to the glory of God for blessings received.

RIDE REQUESTED . . . Ruth Sims is looking for someone who can provide a ride for her to church on Sundays. She resides at Carriage Crossing Senior Living, Arcola. She can be reached at 520-954-7352, or speak with Pastor.

SUNDAY SCHOOL RALLY DAY . . . is Sunday, September 8, 10:30 am. Come and join in the celebration and register your child(ren) for the 2019–2020 Sunday School year.

UPCOMING LLL RETREAT . . . District LLL Retreat: “St. Paul’s Missionary Journeys”, Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019 at Camp CILCA.  Doors open at 8:00 am; opening devotion at 9:00 AM. Closing at 3:30 PM.  Advance registration is requested.  Payment can be made at check-in.  It is open to anyone that is interested and registered.  The apostle Paul set out into the Mediterranean world, telling the Good News of Jesus.  No setting proved too formidable for him, no place too forbidding.  Paul got his resolve from his message and his Master.  Facing with the mission challenges of the 21st century, we will study how Paul by God’s grace met mission challenges in the first century. Please read Acts, Chapters 13-20 ahead of time, and bring your Bible to the retreat!  Registration is $10.00 which includes lunch. For planning purposes, we request registration by Sunday, September 1, 2019. Contact Deloris Blessman for questions and to register at (309)-361-1461 or email: delorisblessman@yahoo.com.  Or snail mail; 24204 CR 1850N, Topeka, IL  61567.  Payment can be made at check-in or by mail to Deloris.

CARLE HOSPICE IS STILL LOOKING . . . for compassionate individuals to help serve our community by providing respite care and companionship to hospice patients for just a few hours.  Some activities include listening to concerns, being a support person, keeping the patient company, writing a letter, or reading to the patient.  We DO NOT ask the volunteers to provide any type of health services, just friendly visits.  If you are interested, please visit Carle.org/volunteer and click the Hospice button to fill out an application.  For questions, call (217) 383-8721 or email Despina.Hadjiagapiou@carle.com.  A flyer is posted on the board by the kitchen for further information.
