CHURCH NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Deuteronomy 10:12–21; 1 Corinthians 1:1–9; Matthew 22:34–46.
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . “Do not put yourself forward in the king’s presence” (Prov. 25:6–14). Rather, take the lowest position at the table. Humble yourself before Him. For your place is not for you to take but for Him to give. Conduct yourself with all lowliness and gentleness, bearing with one another in love (Eph. 4:1–6), that the King may give you glory in the presence of those at the table with you. “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Luke 14:1–11). Is this not the way of Christ? He is the one who took the lowest place, who humbled Himself even to the point of death for us. He is now exalted to the highest place at the right hand of the Father that penitent believers may be exalted together with Him in the resurrection. To the humble at His Supper He says, “Friend, move up higher,” giving you His very body and blood for your forgiveness that you may ascend to take part in the great wedding feast which has no end.
THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Luke 14:11 “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” The Kingdom of God is always like this. We must die in baptism in order to truly live. We must be humbled so that we can be exalted. And when we give away, we receive much more than we bargained for: peace of mind, contentment, joy.
THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . were given to the glory of God by Josh & Jaimee Whitson on the occasion of their wedding anniversary.
PASTOR WILL BE AWAY . . . October 13–15, on behalf of the LCMS Concordia University System as a reviewer for their triennial formal visitation of Concordia University Chicago. In case of emergency, you may reach him on his mobile phone or contact one of the elders (Jack Appleby, Steve Hilgendorf, Les Sluder, Mark Whitson).
ALTAR GUILD, COFFEE COMMITTEE, & FUNERAL CHAIR . . . For October, the Altar Guild is Carol & Cailin Munson. Coffee Committee is the Greg & Celeste Nau. October Funeral Chair is Krista Freebairn. For November, the Altar Guild is Sarah & Savana Andrésen. Coffee Committee is the Reifsteck family. November Funeral Chair is Ruth Bretz.
REMINDER: VOTERS’ ASSEMBLY MEETING . . . is Sunday, October 19, at 10:30 am. Just a reminder that any voting member who is absent from the voters’ meetings for a full year without a valid excuse shall have his/her name removed from the roster of voting members. Those who are 65 and older can submit a written request to have their name placed on the senior voting member list and will be automatically excused. If any senior member is unsure whether or not there is a written request on file, please contact the office. If any member has been removed from the roster of voting members, he/she can be reinstated by a request to the elders and attendance at the voters’ meeting approving that request.
RATE & REVIEW IMMANUEL ON GOOGLE . . . Did you know that throughout the United States each month over 2 million people search on Google for “Churches Near Me.”? That’s how a majority of people find churches to visit. Therefore, being visible on Google as one of the top results for searches is important to get found. One way to increase your visibility on Google is through their Rate & Review feature. Please consider rating and review Immanuel on Google by going to: https://g.page/r/CdbSahe0h2B0EAI/review
Sunday School Art Project . . . We’re excited to share that LCMS artist, Ed Riojas, has begun work on a special series of drawings and paintings depicting the 12 Apostles. These beautiful works will be displayed over the rock panels on the face of the choir loft balcony, adding a rich visual confession to our sanctuary. The Sunday School has already raised with the help of some other donations, around $10,000. This is two-thirds of the needed $15,000 in just a few months. If you are interested in supporting this Sunday School art project alongside of our Sunday School students, please contact pastor or speak with one of the members of the Board of Christian Education. Thank you for helping make this vision a reality for our congregation!
Updates Needed for Funeral Dinner Food Call List . . . Any volunteers willing to bring food for funeral dinners, please check the list at the back of the church to make sure your phone number is up to date. In addition, if you would like your name added or taken off, please also note that on the list. Thank you!
TO CELEBRATE THE REFORMATION . . . you are invited to a hymn festival on October 25 at 4:00 PM at University Lutheran Church, 604 E. Chalmers Street, Champaign. Each year on October 26, the Lutheran church celebrates three hymnwriters: Philipp Nicolai (1556-1608), Johann Heermann (1585-1647), and Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676). These men epitomize the rich heritage of Lutheran hymnody that blossomed after the Reformation. At this recital, which takes place on the eve of church’s commemoration of the hymnwriters, you’ll sing hymns written by Nicolai, Heermann, and Gerhardt, and hear organ literature based on each tune. Composers will include Lutheran greats Johann Gottfried Walther (1684-1748) and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), and present-day Lutheran composers Paul Manz (1919-2009) and Kevin Hildebrand (b. 1973).
The featured organist is Mr. Nathan Grime. Nathan is the fifth and sixth grade homeroom teacher at Our Savior Lutheran School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. At Our Savior, he teaches upper school classes in Grammar, Writing, and Literature. Nathan is Assistant Kantor at Our Savior Lutheran Church, where he accompanies choirs, teaches piano lessons, and regularly plays organ for services. Nathan studied organ performance at Hillsdale College, where he graduated in 2020 with a degree in Rhetoric. After graduation, he continued studying organ with Kevin Hildebrand at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, for two years. Nathan is currently a student in Hillsdale’s Master of Classical Education Leadership program. When he’s not teaching, making music, or studying, Nathan enjoys running outdoors and coaching basketball. Nathan and his wife, Claire, were married in August.
We are located at the northeast corner of 6th and Chalmers at the campus of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. You may park for free in the university parking lot that is at the southwest corner of 6th and Chalmers (blue circle) or the lot west of 6th Street (red circle). Street parking around the church is free on Sundays. We also have a small parking lot off of Chalmers.
