God is with us in Word and Sacrament

Believe, Belong, Become (Feb 27–March 5)

We BELIEVE that Jesus Christ purchased and won us from sin, death, and the devil with His own blood. Therefore, we BELONG to Him and in Him we belong to one another, so that we BECOME like Him as we mature in faith toward God and fervent love toward one another.

Become . . .

The Gospel text for this upcoming Sunday is the account of the Canaanite woman. She comes to Jesus, the Son of David, for mercy because her daughter is oppressed by a demon. It appears that our Lord, who abounds in compassion, ignores her. He doesn’t respond simply because she uses the right words, as a formula for incantation. But he presses to reveal her faith. She doesn’t give up or give in. She doesn’t want to take away from the children’s table. She doesn’t want Jesus to choose between her and the people of Israel. She doesn’t want the children’s bread. She wants to be fed by the master himself. She is content with crumbs that fall from Him. And He is willing to forego eating (Matthew 4:1–11) so that she will be satisfied. Be content then with what the Lord has given you and do not give up on your prayers to Him who is willing to give you more than you either ask or desire (Eph 3:20).
