After an illness with all of her children faithfully attending to her, Ann Fleener Koss departed this world Thursday morning (Oct. 13, 2016) with her daughter Barbara at her side. She was residing at the Tuscola Health Center after a fall in her home in August 2016.

She received excellent loving care from the staff and from Harbor Light Hospice. The family would like to thank each and every staff member at Tuscola Health Center for their compassion, empathy, humor and gentle acts of kindness they do every day.

Ann was the first daughter born to Arthur and Lena Fleener on March 2, 1924. Her surviving little sisters are Betty Hance of Orono, Minn., and Janet Rhodes of Walkerton, Ind. She will reunite in heaven with her brother, Arthur Bradley Fleener, and sisters, Virginia Polk and Ruth Pringle.

She was a child of the Depression and was careful with a dollar and worked hard all her life. She graduated from Villa Grove High School in 1942 and attended many Nifty Fifty alumni dinners. After high school, she worked in a factory in Whiting, Ind., during the war.

She married William Koss on June 16, 1946. They had four children, Joyce (Larry) Sigler of Charleston, Janice (Richard) Nagler of Solvang, Calif., Barbara (Curtis) Charter of Tuscola and Bill (Sandy) Koss of Villa Grove. Ann has nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, seven bonus grandchildren, 11 bonus great-grandchildren and three bonus great-great-grandchildren.

Ann worked at the Index Notion and Yallaly’s Furniture in Villa Grove while raising her family. She was a member of Douglas County Home Extension for many years. She was a 60-plus-year member of the VFW Auxiliary.

She attended craft classes at the library for several years, and her friends she made there were very special to her. She helped prepare and deliver Peace Meals in earlier years, and she continued to enjoy going to the senior center and sharing a meal and friendship with all her friends there. She had a great time putting puzzles together and winning at bingo. Her last favorite moments on earth were reading the cards she received from her friends and visiting with them.

She spent all her 92 years in Villa Grove, and she loved her hometown. She was Volunteer of the Year in 2002 and grand marshal of the Loyalty Day Parade. When she was able, she was always lending a hand to her neighbor or helping in the kitchen at a community event. She loved to cook and made wonderful cinnamon rolls and pies.

Ann was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tuscola. She was a member of the Ladies Aid for many years.

Her funeral will be Monday, Oct. 17, 2016, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 600 E. Northline Road, Tuscola. Visitation will be one hour before the funeral. Visitation is at 10 a.m. with the funeral at 11 a.m. Interment will be at the Villa Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests memorials to be given to the Villa Grove Community Library and the Senior Center/Peace Meals.
