THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Jer 8:4–12; 1 Cor 12:1–11; Luke 19:41–48.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . “The master commended the dishonest manager for his shrewdness” (Luke 16:1–9). The steward’s shrewdness is praiseworthy for two reasons. First, he knew the master would be merciful. He trusted that the master would honor the debts he forgave in the master’s name. In the same way, though we have squandered our heavenly Father’s possessions in selfishness and sin, Jesus is the Steward who has canceled our debt, knowing that His forgiveness will be honored by the Father because of the holy cross. Secondly, the steward was shrewd in using oil and wheat to provide for his earthly welfare. So also do these earthly elements aid us when pressed into heavenly use in the anointing of baptism and the wheat of the Lord’s Supper. Those who have the Sacraments will have an eternal home when their earthly home fails. These provide us aid in times of temptation (1 Cor. 10:6–13). For the Lord is our strength and a shield to all who trust in Him (2 Sam. 22:26–34).

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Luke 16:8 “For the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light.” Money is a tool that can be used for good or wicked purposes. Often unbelievers show more shrewdness in this that we Christians. If we really believe all that stuff we say in the Creed every Sunday . . . won’t that affect how we use our money?

THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Mike & Tina Russo to the glory of God and in thanksgiving for all the help and support from Immanuel when Marissa was ill in church.

THANK YOU . . . to all of you who helped at the church clean-up day. Much was accomplished and the building and grounds are ready for another year of Sunday School, Catechism, and much, much, more.

EXPERT GUESTS, EXPANSIVE TOPICS, EXTOLLING CHRIST . . . Issues, Etc. is a radio talk show hosted by LCMS pastor, Rev Todd Wilken, and produced by Lutheran Public Radio in Collinsville, Illinois. You can listen at your convenience at www.issuesetc.org.

PEACE MEALS . . . August is Immanuel’s month to deliver Peace Meals. Peace Meals delivers Monday–Thursday, beginning at 11:00 am. Team up with someone from church to help get these low-cost, nutritious meals to those in need. Please contact Roger & Wanda Long to volunteer.

ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH . . . in rural Mattoon (Dorans) will be hosting their annual Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, August 6, 4:30 pm–7:00 pm. A free-will offering will be taken with matching funds provided by Thrivent Financial. All proceeds will go to Rising Phoenix of Charleston.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS NEEDED . . . for the 2014–2015 Academic Year. If you are willing to teach for one, two, or three months out of the year, please contact Pastor Braaten. We are still in need of one teacher for the 4th–6th grade class. If this position is not filled those grades will not have Sunday School. Rally Day for Sunday School is on Sunday, September 7, and classes begin on Sunday, September 14.

PASTOR WILL BE AWAY . . . on vacation August 18–August 31. If you have an emergency and need to contact him, you may do so on his mobile phone (217) 460‑2077, or you may contact one of the Elders.

THERE ARE STILL . . . openings to put flowers on the Altar. Please sign up on the bulletin board in the hallway by the sanctuary or call the church office. Flowers are $30.00 and can be special ordered. Flowers can be taken home after the Sunday’s service.

CAMP CILCA GOLF OUTING . . . Come and enjoy a relaxing round of golf with your friends in support of Camp CILCA, the CID’s Lutheran Camp. The format is a scramble. So organize your own team of four or just come and be put on a team. The cost is $50.00 and that covers your golf, cart, meal, and prizes. The outing is at The Rail (Springfield, Illinois) on Friday, September 19, 1:00 pm. Contact Pastor Daniel Smith for details or to register (pastordan@grics.net).
