THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Jer 8:4–12; 1 Cor 12:1–11; Luke 19:41–48.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . “The master commended the dishonest manager for his shrewdness” (Luke 16:1–9). The steward’s shrewdness is praiseworthy for two reasons. First, he knew the master would be merciful. He trusted that the master would honor the debts he forgave in the master’s name. In the same way, though we have squandered our heavenly Father’s possessions in selfishness and sin, Jesus is the Steward who has canceled our debt, knowing that His forgiveness will be honored by the Father because of the holy cross. Secondly, the steward was shrewd in using oil and wheat to provide for his earthly welfare. So also do these earthly elements aid us when pressed into heavenly use in the anointing of baptism and the wheat of the Lord’s Supper. Those who have the Sacraments will have an eternal home when their earthly home fails. These provide us aid in times of temptation (1 Cor. 10:6–13). For the Lord is our strength and a shield to all who trust in Him (2 Sam. 22:26–34).

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Luke 16:8 “For the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light.” Money is a tool that can be used for good or wicked purposes. Often unbelievers show more shrewdness in this that we Christians. If we really believe all that stuff we say in the Creed every Sunday . . . won’t that affect how we use our money?

THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Corky & Theresa Fields to the glory of God on the occasion of their wedding anniversary.

BIBLE STUDY ON DIETRICH BONHOEFFER . . . Today is the second of four sessions on Dietrich Bonhoeffer. This video-based study will help us discover the major themes of Bonhoeffer’s writing and speaking and how he not only transformed an entire faith community in Germany during World War II, but also how his beliefs continue to impact the Christian faith of people throughout the world today. Pulling these themes from all his major books, we will understand why these spiritual truths meant so much to Bonhoeffer and how they can be an inspiration and challenge to our own faith. Come and join us during the Adult Bible Study at 10:30 am.

IMMANUEL YOUTH GROUP . . . is scheduled to meet here at church today, July 24, at 6:00 pm to travel to Lake Fork Sportsman’s Club north of Atwood as guests of Jack Appleby. The June outing was rained out. Youth Group is open to those entering 8th grade and to those in high school. Please let Pastor know if you are coming this evening.

POTLUCK JULY 31 FOR HAYDEN FOLKS . . . Hayden and his wife Natanya will be visiting Immanuel the weekend of July 30–31. Plan to attend the Divine Service, Bible Class, and potluck immediately following Bible Class to learn more about Hayden and Natanya!

SEEKING IMMANUEL SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS . . . for the 2016—2017 academic year. Prayerfully consider being part of the Lutheran education and formation of our children. With enough teachers, we could have the opportunity to team teach—split time between teaching Sunday School and attending Adult Bible Class. If you are interested, please talk with Pastor or a member of the Board of Education.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS . . . for August 21, 3:00—6:00 pm!  The Board of Missions and Evangelism will be hosting the annual Immanuel Church picnic. The Men’s Club is frying fish. The Board of Mission & Evangelism is providing hot dogs and hamburgers. Come with a side dish or a dessert to pass. We will be eating at 4:00 pm. Come out and enjoy the food and camaraderie that our Lord gives in the family of His church.

BI-MONTHLY MISSION . . . will be August 7. All loose cash in the offering will go to SAM Pantry. SAM (Social Action Ministry) food pantry is a ministry of TUMC that serves families all over Douglas County. Unfortunately, in today’s economic environment, people are having to make choices about buying food or paying utility bills or medical bills. The SAM food pantry exists to make that choice a little easier. Staffed by a number of the community churches (including members from Immanuel), patrons receive a supply of food, no more often than once a month, appropriate to the number of persons in their home.

PEACE MEALS . . . August is Immanuel’s month to deliver Peace Meals. Peace Meals delivers Monday–Thursday, beginning at 11:00 am. Team up with someone from church to help get these low-cost, nutritious meals to those in need. Please contact Roger & Wanda Long to volunteer.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL—ST. PAUL’S, DORANS . . . is Monday, July 25, 4:30—7:00 pm. St. Paul’s is located at 8975 E CR 1200 N, Mattoon (2 miles east of Dorans). See the bulletin board outside the kitchen for more information.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL—IMMANUEL/CHARLESTON . . . is Sunday, July 31, 11:00 am—2:00 pm. Immanuel is located at 902 Cleveland Ave., Charleston. This is part of Immanuel’s 90th anniversary celebration series. There will be games and prizes. Ice cream and meat will be provided; please bring your own table service, sides, drinks, and a blanket. Don’t forget your favorite ice cream topper to share!
