THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Jeremiah 23:16–29; Romans 8:12–17; Matthew 7:15–23.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . In the Garden of Eden, our first parents received food freely from the gracious hand of God, apart from any burdensome work (Gen 2:7–17). But after the fall, food would be received only through toil and labor. The curse declared, “By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground . . .” (Gen. 3:19). In other words, “The wages of sin is death” (Rom. 6:23). But into this wilderness world came Jesus the Messiah to restore creation. Having compassion on the weary multitudes, He renewed the bounty of Eden on the third day, freely granting an abundance of bread to the 4,000 (Mark 8:1–9). So also our Lord Jesus, having endured the burden of our sin, was raised on the third day to bring us back to Paradise. He now miraculously turns the bread of death into the Bread of Life in the Sacrament, giving us His very body and blood for our forgiveness. For “the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 6:23).

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Romans 6:19 “For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.” To be sanctified means to be set aside for God’s purposes. St. Paul encourages us to see ourselves, our bodies, our souls, and all that we are as set aside for God’s work—in all that we do whether in the home, church, or society at large.

BUNCO IS BACK! . . . In keeping with what we have done in the past, meeting on the first Sunday of each month, the ladies of Immanuel are invited to play Bunco on Sunday, September 5 at 6:30 pm. No experience necessary—it’s an easy game to learn. We will be meeting in the church fellowship hall. Please bring a snack (and a friend or two!) and be ready to laugh!

THERE ARE OPENINGS . . . on the flower chart. Take a look on the bulletin board across from the member mailboxes to see what opportunities are still available. Thank you!

THANK YOU . . . for the prayers, cards, and well wishes for a quick and full recovery from my broken arm.  A special thank you to Pastor Braaten, Lauren, and their family for visiting and bringing church and communion into our home.  I am so thankful to have been blessed with my Immanuel family.  Mark Whitson

WHY? . . . Why does the pastor walk toward the altar during the singing of the Introit? The word Introit means “entrance,” and is the point at which we enter into the Divine Service. (The opening hymn and the confession and absolution, which precede the Introit, are preparatory to the Divine Service, but are not in fact part of the Divine Service itself.) The service opens with the Introit because here the faithful of God enter by faith into His holy place. This is signified by the movement which the celebrant makes toward the altar while the Introit is sung. The celebrant is the representative of Christ among us, which is why he might appropriately be vested in a chasuble, and since we are all in Christ, as St. Paul says, therefore we are all, iconically speaking, “in the celebrant,” who thus acts not only in the stead of Christ, but in the stead of Christ’s body, the Church. Therefore when the celebrant approaches the altar, in truth all are approaching the altar. This is a priestly function of the Office of the Holy Ministry. The movement is made by one man, but it is a movement of the whole Church. This is fitting because it serves to remind us that the whole Church is one, united in the one man, Jesus Christ.
