THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Micah 7:18–20; 1 Timothy 1:12–17; Luke 15:1–10.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . Wisdom has issued an invitation to the divine feast: “Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the way of insight” (Prov. 9:5–6). This is the call of the Spirit of Christ to believe the Gospel and to receive His saving gifts in the Holy Supper. Many make excuses and reject this invitation, even as the Jews did in the days of Jesus, yet the Master’s house will be filled. The Gospel call therefore goes out to the lowly and despised, into the highways, even to all the Gentiles (Luke 14:15–24). For “you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ” (Eph. 2:13–22). In Christ, believing Jews and Gentiles are no longer strangers but fellow members of the household of God. The enmity of class and race is put to death through the cross. Having been reconciled in the one Body of Christ, we are enabled to love one another (1 John 3:13–18) as we await the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom which will have no end.

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Luke 14:19 “And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.’” The things of this world tempt us to cast aside the things of God. The things of this world demand our attention, time, finances, etc. But Jesus invites us to the feast – what could be more important than this gracious invitation? Today’s parable invites us to examine our own priorities and attempted excuses…and then to come home to the Lord who invites us in humble repentance.

PASTOR WILL BE AWAY . . . on vacation Monday, July 1, through Wednesday, July 3. In case of emergencies, you may call him on his mobile phone, or you may contact one of the Elders: Jack Appleby, Kenny Kresin, Josh Whitson, and Mark Whitson.

ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given to the glory of God by Darrell & Dolores Ford in memory of Darrell’s Mother’s birthday the 29th of June.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL . . . Thank you to everyone who helped make VBS a success this year. Students enjoyed learning and singing about Jonah, the running prophet, and God’s desire for all people to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth. The snacks, the crafts, and games were a favorite. A special thanks to Jack and Mary Appleby for putting together the set with a ship and a great, big, ginormous fish. We had a total of twenty-eight students, with an average attendance of twenty-five, throughout the week. Thank you again.

REV RICK MILAS’ RETIREMENT CELEBRATION . . . University Lutheran Church at the University of Illinois has been blessed by the ministry of Pastor Rick Milas for the last 25 years.  We are honored to host his retirement service on Sunday July 28 at 10:30AM.  Following the service will be a cookout at University Lutheran Church.  For those who cannot make it that Sunday; an additional Saturday (July 27) event will be held from 3:00-7:00 PM, also at the University Lutheran.  We invite you to attend either or both celebrations.  Please RSPV to rick.milas.unilu.retirement@gmail.com. We pray for God’s blessing on Pastor and Martha Milas as they enter into this new season of retirement together.”

THERE ARE STILL OPENINGS FOR FLOWERS . . . on the flower chart. Sign up individually or team up with someone. Flowers are $35.00 per weekend. Thank you!

CARLE HOSPICE IS LOOKING . . . for compassionate individuals to help serve our community by providing respite care and companionship to hospice patients for just a few hours.  Some activities include listening to concerns, being a support person, keeping the patient company, writing a letter, or reading to the patient.  We DO NOT ask the volunteers to provide any type of health services, just friendly visits.  If you are interested, please visit Carle.org/volunteer and click the Hospice button to fill out an application.  For questions, call (217) 383-8721 or email Despina.Hadjiagapiou@carle.com.  A flyer is posted on the board by the kitchen for further information.

JOY TO THE WORLD . . . Many thanks to you, dear congregations of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, for your bold and faithful support of the 2019–21 LCMS National Offering. On National Offering Sunday, you put your joy in action, serving your neighbors around the world who need the hope and peace that only Christ can offer. Your church’s contribution will go out alongside the generous offerings of your sister congregations to accomplish more than we can imagine. We rejoice and give thanks that, together, we get to vigorously make known the Good News of Jesus Christ, joy incarnate, to the world. For updates on the 2019–21 LCMS National Offering, including the growing total collected and the use of donations, go to lcms.org/national-offering.
