THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Deut. 10:12–21; 1 Corinthians 1:4–9; Matthew 22:34–46.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . “Do not put yourself forward in the king’s presence” (Prov. 25:6–14). Rather, take the lowest position at the table. Humble yourself before Him. For your place is not for you to take but for Him to give. Conduct yourself with all lowliness and gentleness, bearing with one another in love (Eph. 4:1–6), that the King may give you glory in the presence of those at the table with you. “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Luke 14:1–11). Is this not the way of Christ? He is the one who took the lowest place, who humbled Himself even to the point of death for us. He is now exalted to the highest place at the right hand of the Father that penitent believers may be exalted together with Him in the resurrection. To the humble at His Supper He says, “Friend, move up higher,” giving you His very body and blood for your forgiveness that you may ascend to take part in the great wedding feast which has no end.

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Luke 14:11 “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” The Kingdom of God is always like this. We must die in baptism in order to truly live. We must be humbled so that we can be exalted. And when we give away, we receive much more than we bargained for: peace of mind, contentment, joy.

ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Darrell & Dolores Ford to the glory of God in thanksgiving for blessings received.

LADIES AID FALL SALAD SUPPER . . . will be Thursday, October 4, 6:30 PM, in the basement of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Sadorus. Come and enjoy fun, food, fellowship, and entertainment by Dan Ryan’s Express. RSVP no later than Monday, October 1, by calling Loretta Stoerger at (217) 598-2971.

ON OCTOBER 20TH ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN, MATTOON . . . will host the Central Illinois District evangelism workshop entitled, “Everyone His Witness” or E1HW. This workshop will focus on helping each and every Christian share their faith with their neighbor. Registration starts at 9:00 AM. There is a $10.00 registration fee which will cover the cost of lunch for the day. You may mail your registration fee in advance to St. John Lutheran Church 200 Charleston Ave., Mattoon, IL 61938 ATTN: E1HW. Let Pastor or Leigh Ann know if you are interested in attending this event.

A WORKSHOP . . . on “Thank, Praise, Serve, and Obey – Recover the Joys of Piety” will be led by Rev. William C. Weedon, Director of Worship for the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Christ Lutheran Church, Normal, Illinois.
