THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Proverbs 25:6–14; Ephesians 4:1–6; Luke 14:1–11.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . A large funeral procession carrying the only son of a widow is confronted by another large procession, Jesus and His followers. Death and Life meet face to face at the gate of the city (Luke 7:11–17). Filled with compassion, Jesus comes into direct contact with our mortality in order to overcome it. He touches the coffin and speaks His creative words of life, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” Jesus does what is neither expected nor requested. For through Christ, God the Father “is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think” (Eph. 3:14–21). Jesus bore our death in His body that we may share in His resurrection. Even as Elijah stretched himself out three times over the Zarephath woman’s son (2 Kings 17:17–24), God stretched Himself out over us in the threefold application of His name in the baptismal water, breathing new and everlasting life into us. “To Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Ephesians 3:14–15 “For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.” We have a Father in heaven. He cares for us. He knows how to give us all good things, beginning with our salvation in Christ Jesus. This knowledge frees us from worry and anxiety. Jesus returned to this theme again and again, and we should take Him at His Word.

OCTOBER BI-MONTHLY MISSION . . . is Sunday, October 3. October’s bi-monthly offering has been designated for CID Campus Ministries (given to one campus ministry per year on a rotation). This year’s offering will be given to the Campus Ministry at Eastern Illinois University, Charleston. Checks may be made out to Immanuel Lutheran Church. An envelope will be placed in your member mailbox next week for your convenience. Your generosity is truly appreciated.

THE OCTOBER CALENDAR . . . with events, birthdays, and anniversaries is now available on the table across from the church mailboxes.

WHY? . . . Why is the General Prayer positioned after the Sermon and before the Administration of the Sacrament of the Altar? The General Prayer, also called The Prayer of the Church, is a gathering point for the Christian Church as it prepares to partake of the Sacrament of the Altar. In ancient times, the names of people for whom prayers were intended were written on cards diptychs, and while prayers were offered for the conversion of the heathen, only the names of Christians appeared on the diptychs. Although this custom does not survive, still the idea is rightly preserved that here the members of the church are praying for one another, and so bearing one another’s burdens. This unifying prayer thus serves as a key preparation for attending together at the altar. In some traditions, the kiss of peace still remains from the ancient church as a further gesture of unity. In any case, there must be no divisions among Christians who commune together.

YOUTH GROUP EVENT . . . is next week. It’s a mystery event. Parents, if you haven’t already, please let pastor know whether you plan to attend at pastor.braaten@gmail.com.

COME TO BIBLE CLASS . . . We have just begun a study of Proverbs. We are only five chapters in, so it’s still a great time to join us for this study. We hope you will join us.

THERE ARE OPENINGS . . . on the flower schedule for September and October. Take a look on the bulletin board across from the member mailboxes to see what opportunities are still available. Thank you!

SERVICES ONLINE . . . A copy of the service bulletin, which includes all the responses and the hymns, is available at Immanuel’s website under the Sermons tab by clicking on the button labeled PDF.
