THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Proverbs 4:10–23; Galatians 5:16–24; Luke 17:11–19.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . The Law cannot help us or give us life. Rather, it confines everyone under sin as wounded and naked before God (Gal. 3:15–22). So it is that two figures of the Law, the priest and the Levite, passed by the injured man on the side of the road (Luke 10:23–37). Only the promised Seed of Abraham can rescue us and make us righteous before God. Only the Samaritan, our Lord Jesus, had compassion. He came down to us in our lost and dying condition, pouring on the oil and wine of the Sacraments. He placed us on His own animal, bearing our sin and brokenness in His body on the cross to restore us. Jesus brought us to the inn, that is, the Church, and gave the innkeeper two denarii, that His double forgiveness might continue to be ministered to us. In this way the Lord, by whose Law we are torn and stricken, heals us and revives us by His Gospel and raises us up with Himself on the third day, that we may live in His sight (Hos. 6:1–6).

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Luke 10:25 “And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, ‘Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’” That’s just not a good question! Doing and inheriting just don’t go together: what can you do to inherit the English throne? Nothing. Inheriting is about birth right; doing is about merit. We receive eternal life by birth right in our Baptism into Christ. All of our doing in the Kingdom of God flows from this, from who we are by our new birth. It can never be the other way around.

THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Craig & Carol Munson to the glory of God for blessings received.

PEACE MEALS . . . Meal delivery for the month of August is finished. A special thanks goes to long-time faithful volunteers—The Alexanders, Laverl Byers, The Fords, The Longs—and also to our new volunteers—Terry and Rhonda Harbaugh. Your continued help and support for the Peace Meal program is extremely valuable and appreciated!

IMMANUEL MEMORIAL GARDEN . . . The church is in the process of establishing a memorial garden to recognize and remember our members: those who have gone to their eternal reward and even those who now stand beside us. The focal point of the garden (located between the south classrooms and the sidewalk) will be a 5 foot, 8 inch granite cross with a message that reads: “Dedicated to those who came before us, those who stand beside us, and those who carry on after we are gone.” The project is funded by current memorial funds. Around that cross extends a cross-shaped sidewalk edged by granite pavers. We hope that past and current members will choose to honor their loved ones by purchasing a granite paver with their names inscribed. The cost for a paver is $150.00. Purchase forms are available in the church office. Questions may be addressed to the Memorial Fund Committee (Darrell Ford and Steve Hilgendorf). For the paver to be included in the initial construction this fall, the committee needs your form and payment returned by September 15. Pavers can always be added at a later date.

2020–2021 SUNDAY SCHOOL REGISTRATION . . . is now open. Please register your child(ren) online at this address: https://wp.me/p4MrsX-15F. Classes begin on Sunday, September 13.

CID GOLF FUNDRAISER . . . the Lutheran Legacy Foundation is hosting a golf scramble at Hickory Point in Forsyth, Illinois on Friday September 27. The fee is $60.00 with any further donations going directly to Camp CILCA and CILCA Endowment Fund. The registration deadline is September 23. You may email your registration to: revdms@gmail.com.

Central Illinois District Scholarship Sunday . . .  is September 13. Gifts will be used to support our CID students who are attending an LCMS seminary or university to become a pastor, teacher or other full-time church worker. Please plan to make a generous gift now or on September 13. Gifts may be designated “CID Scholarship Fund” to be used for the 2020–2021 school year or be designated “CID Endowment Fund” to provide gifts every year for this ongoing need. Checks may be routed through your church’s offering plate or sent to the Central Illinois District LCMS, 1850 N. Grand Avenue West, Springfield, IL  62702-1626. If you are considering a major gift, or would like to include scholarships for CID seminarians or church worker students in your estate planning or through a life insurance policy, please contact CID Planned Gift Counselor, Rev. Charles Olander, at (217) 416-8842 or c-olander@msn.com for assistance.  Thank you.

HOLY COMMUNION . . . The offer still stands that if you desire the Holy Communion, you can make an appointment with Pastor to receive the Lord’s Supper either at church or in your home until services resume.

SERVICES ONLINE . . . A copy of the service bulletin, which includes all the responses and the hymns, is available at Immanuel’s website under the Sermons tab by clicking on the button labeled PDF. This video option will continue to be made available until our usual service times resume. You can access these online services in three places:

  1. On Immanuel’s Facebook page
  2. On Immanuel’s Website under the Sermons tab
  3. On Immanuel’s YouTube channel

MEMORY WORK . . . If a Sunday School student has been able to learn the next level of the Catechism Learn-By-Heart Program and would like to recite it to Pastor, you can schedule a meeting with him to do this through Zoom, Skype, or Facetime. Contact Pastor by e-mail or phone.

CHANGES IN MANDATED REPORTER LAW . . . The state of Illinois recently made significant changes to the mandated reporter law. By law, any person affiliated with the church who, in their role, comes into contact with children, either in a paid position or as a volunteer, is now a mandated reporter. Mandated reporters are required to call the DCFS Hotline when they have reasonable cause to believe that a child known to them in their professional or official capacity may be an abused or neglected child. As such, s/he must undergo training within three months of first serving. This is only a training session not a background check. This new law would include the following at Immanuel: all Sunday School teachers, VBS volunteers, youth group chaperones, and those on Altar Guild who work with the Jr. Altar Guild. To that end, we ask that those individuals in the groups listed, follow THIS LINK to take the online training. This training takes roughly 60 minutes to complete. Upon completion of the training, a certificate is awarded which will need to be printed off and a copy be given to Pastor to keep on file. For those who are unable to access this online training at home, time will be available for you to complete this in the church office. Please find time to complete the online training as soon as possible. While we understand that this may be a burden for some, please know that we are willing to help you get the necessary training so that we as a church are compliant with this new law. If you have any questions or concerns, please talk with one of the members of the Board of Christian Education or Pastor. Thank you!
