THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . 2 Chron 28:8–15; Galatians 3:15–22; Luke 10:23–37.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . A man who was deaf and therefore also had an impediment in his speech was brought to Jesus (Mark 7:31–37). In the same way, all are by nature deaf toward God and therefore also unable to confess the faith rightly. For “faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Rom. 10:9–17). Jesus put His fingers into the man’s ears, and He spat and touched His tongue. Even so in Holy Baptism, water sanctified by the words of Jesus’ mouth is applied to us; and the finger of God, that is, the life–giving Holy Spirit (2 Cor. 3:4–11) is put into our ears in the hearing of the baptismal Gospel. Jesus’ sighing “Ephphatha” opened the man’s ears, and his tongue was loosed to speak plainly as Isaiah prophesied of the Messiah, “In that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book” (Is. 29:18–24). So also, He who sighed and breathed His last on the cross for us has given us to hear and believe in Him and has opened our lips that our mouths may declare His praise.

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . 2 Corinthians 3:5 “Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God.” We are not sufficient, not enough, not capable in and of ourselves. But God gives us what is enough, what is sufficient, and makes us capable. That is the beginning of wisdom: we are utterly dependent on God’s mercy. Our whole Christian life flows forth from this dependence.

THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by The Waldrops to the glory of God on the occasion of their anniversary.

BI-MONTHLY MISSION . . . The Bi-Monthly Mission for August goes to SAM Pantry. An envelope designated for SAM Pantry has been placed in your mailbox. Please make your check out to Immanuel Lutheran Church. Thank you!

NORTHWARD MILK MONEY . . . The jug to collect milk money for Northward, will be set out since school has begun. The Board of Mission and Evangelism has been in contact with the school about where the funds are needed most. So, the funds collected in the milk money jug will go toward the “Help A Child Fund” this year. Thank you for your ongoing support.

FIRST DAY OF SUNDAY SCHOOL . . . is Sunday, September 12. The opening begins at 10:20 am in the Sanctuary. Music will be in the choir loft. And then classes in the Sunday School classrooms.

YOUTH GROUP EVENT . . . is next Sunday. We will be going fishing at Wimple Park. Meet at the park with your fishing gear at 5:00 pm. Bait will be provided. If you don’t have poles and tackle, we’ll have extras. Please RSVP so we know how many to provide food for (unless you want to cook up the fish you catch!).

THE SEPTEMBER CALENDAR . . . with birthdays and anniversaries is available on the table across from members’ mailboxes.

CAMP CILCA SCRAMBLE GOLF OUTING . . . is Friday, September 24! Be sure to save the date. We will be back at Hickory Point, Forsythe, IL. Shotgun start at 1:00 pm. Put together a team or be placed on a team. Lutheran Legacy Foundation has prepaid for Golf and dinner so the sponsorships and money you give will go right to CILCA and the CILCA Endowment. While $60 will cover your costs, you are free to give what you like! Checki-in begins at 11AM, lunch on your own. Get registered by emailing Pastor Daniel Smith at revdms@gmail.com today. See CILCA.ORG for more info.

WHY? . . . Why is the Triple Hallelujah sung before the Gospel? The Hebrew word Hallelujah means “Praise God,” and is carried into the Latin tongue without translation as Alleluia Its use in the medieval Roman Church was restricted to Eastertide, as an expression of the Church’s highest joy. It was sung with long musical phrases on a single syllable, as an expression of joy too deep for words, the joy of the resurrection of Christ. Our use of the Triple Hallelujah before the Gospel is a related use, since we know that our hearing of the words of Christ in the Gospel is nothing less than a hearing of the Resurrected One speaking among us. Such knowledge gives abinding joy, and thus it is fitting to rise in anticipation of the Gospel and to Hallelujahs. In the Western Church, we omit the Hallelujas from Septugesima until Easter as a kind of fast. There is even an ancient hymn sung for Septuagesima which bids farewell to the Hallelujah. This serves to make the anticipation for Easter, and the joy of Easter, all the greater. The joy of Christ’s resurrection can scarcely be better expressed than by simple Hallelujahs.

BUNCO IS BACK! . . .  In keeping with what we have done in the past, meeting on the first Sunday of each month, the ladies of Immanuel are invited to play Bunco on Sunday, September 5 at 6:30 PM. No experience necessary — it’s an easy game to learn. We will be meeting in the church fellowship hall. Please bring a snack (and a friend or two!) and be ready to laugh!

MONTHLY BIBLE CHALLENGE . . . Beginning February 1, join the Board of Christian Education as we begin to read the entire Bible over the next 12 months. Recognizing that God chose each Book of the Bible to be included, this is an opportunity to read portions of the Bible we may not often read and learn things we may not have known before. This is also a great way to get the full picture of our rich history and events that have taken place, increasing our faith, knowledge and wisdom. Each month a daily reading map will be available at the church and online at Immanuel’s website under the News tab (immanueltuscola.org). The September reading list is now available! We look forward to learning with you!

PEACE MEALS . . . August is Immanuel’s month to deliver Peace Meals. Peace Meals delivers Monday–Friday; meal pick-up time is 10:30 am. Team up with someone from church to help get these low-cost, nutritious meals to those in need. Please contact Joyce Alexander to volunteer.

THERE ARE OPENINGS . . . on the flower schedule for September and October. Take a look on the bulletin board across from the member mailboxes to see what opportunities are still available. Thank you!

SERVICES ONLINE . . . A copy of the service bulletin, which includes all the responses and the hymns, is available at Immanuel’s website under the Sermons tab by clicking on the button labeled PDF. This video option will continue to be made available until our usual service times resume. You can access these online services in three places:
