THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Genesis 4:1–15; 1 Cor 15:1–10; Luke 18:9–14.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . Our Lord wept over Jerusalem for the destruction that would soon come upon her. For she did not recognize the time of God’s visitation in Christ, who had come to bring her peace (Luke 19:41–48). Through His prophets God had consistently called His people to turn from their deceit and false worship. “But My people do not know the judgments of the Lord” (Jer. 8:4–12). They sought to establish their own righteousness rather than receive Christ’s righteousness through faith (Rom. 9:30–10:4). So it was that God was in His temple to cleanse it, a precursor to the once-for-all cleansing from sin which He would accomplish in the temple of His own body on the cross. God grant us to know the things that make for our peace—His visitation in the Word and Sacraments—that by the Holy Spirit we may penitently confess “Jesus is Lord” (1 Cor. 12:1–11).

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” Here is the key to faithful stewardship—and a faithful life in general! God’s Law is not given to us to hamper our fun, but to show us God’s own wisdom. All things being equal, won’t a life lived in accordance with God’s Word be more fulfilling and satisfying than a life lived at odds with God’s Word? Doesn’t He know better than we?

THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Roger & Wanda Long to the glory of God for blessings received.

SINGING THE FAITH . . . is a four-week study of the history of Lutheran congregational singing. Please join us in the Sunday morning Adult Bible Class over the next weeks to learn about the rich heritage of hymns and songs that began during the Reformation, and that we still enjoy today. After this study, we will begin the Book of Hebrews.

PARENT-PASTOR CATECHISM MEETING TODAY . . . at 11:30 am in the Fellowship Hall to discuss what we will learn during the year, what is expected of the student, and what your responsibilities as a parent of a catechism student are. Catechism Classes will begin on Sunday, September 10, 12:30 pm–2:00 pm, at church for all students prepared to begin.

PASTOR WILL BE AWAY. . . August 27 (following Bible Class)–September 3. If you need assistance you may contact him on his mobile phone or call one of the Elders (Jack Appleby, Kenny Kresin, Greg Nau, or Bryce Reifsteck).

FIGHTING ILLINI FOOTBALL . . . Friday, September 29, is an opportunity for us to go as a group to watch the Fighting Illini take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers! U of I offers group rates, and they have contacted us to consider going as a group. We will have a designated parking area for tailgating and a section available for us to sit together. Ticket prices vary depending on the size of our group, so the more participants, the more affordable the price! Let Leigh Ann know as soon as possible if you are interested.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS. . . for Immanuel’s Church Picnic on September 10, 2017, 3:00–6:00 pm (eat at 4:00 pm). The Board of Missions and Evangelism will be cooking hot dogs and hamburgers, and the Men’s Club will be frying fish. Bring your favorite side dish or dessert to share. Come out and enjoy the food and camaraderie that our Lord gives in the family of His church.

THE CAMP CILCA CHICKEN FRY AND AUCTION . . . will take place on Sunday, September 3. A worship service will be held at 10:30 am commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Lutheran Laymen’s League with guest preach Rev. Ken Schurb.  Lunch will be served from 11:30 am–2:30 pm. The live auction will begin at 1:00 pm. Auction donations can be brought to the camp office or call 217 4877497 to arrange for pick-up.  Camping, swimming, games, and devotions are available all weekend long!

CAMP CILCA GOLF OUTING . . . is Friday, September 22, 2017, at The Rail in Springfield. You can form a foursome or go and be added to a team. Check-in is at 11:30 am; Shotgun starts at 12:30 pm. Registration is $60 per person which covers your golf, cart, meal, and prizes. Let Leigh Ann Whitson (immanuel.tuscola@gmail.com) know if you are interested.

AUGUST BOOK OF THE MONTH . . . Church History: The Basics offers an entry into the study of the formation of the Church. Themes, persons, and events are uncovered in historical and chronological order. Read this book to gain a global perspective from the time of the apostles to today. Read more about it in the August newsletter, and, as always, this book can be found in Immanuel’s library, or ordered from Concordia Publishing House (www.cph.org).

THE ENTIRE CHRISTIAN LIFE IS ONE OF REPENTANCE . . . Luther’s 95 Theses begins: “When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said, ‘Repent’ (Matt. 4:17), he willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance.” Christians are to daily die to the old Adam, their sinful nature. The focus is not on our dying or on our old Adam (sin). The focus is on the promise of resurrection in Jesus Christ. He is our life. He is our hope. He is our joy. Repentance is a turning away from self to Jesus. In Him are life and light. In Him are salvation and forgiveness. In Him is eternal life. Repent. You are His. Through Baptism. And this is true every day.
