THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Genesis 15:1–6; 1 John 4:16–21; Luke 16:19–31.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . When Isaiah beheld the glory of the Lord, he cried out “Woe is me!” For the sinner cannot stand in the presence of a holy God and live (Is. 6:1–7). But God the Father lifted up His Son Jesus for us on the cross, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. This eternal life of Christ is given us according to the Holy Spirit’s good pleasure in Baptism. “Unless one is born [again] of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:5). To sinners in fear of death, the messengers of God place on our lips the living body and blood of Christ and speak His words of absolution, “Your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for” (Is. 6:7). Having received forgiveness and life from the Father through the Son by the Holy Spirit, we join with the angels in praising the blessed Trinity, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts!” (Is. 6:3). “For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen” (Rom. 11:33–36).

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Isaiah 6:3 “And one called to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!’” Behold the threefold Name of God—here in Isaiah the angels cry Holy, Holy, Holy, which is nothing else than an indication of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is the Name we are baptized into. We have been made a part of God’s family. And so we are now called to live lives that are in harmony with our new family: we are to be godly, to live in God’s image. As God is loving, and kind, and generous—so are we called to be.

ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Craig & Carol Munson to the glory of God in thanksgiving for blessings received.

IMMANUEL POTLUCK IS TODAY! . . . Joshua Schiff, our adopted seminary student, and his family are visiting Immanuel this weekend, May 26–27. Joshua will be preaching both Saturday and Sunday during the Divine Services. We’ll hear more about his studies and life at the seminary during Sunday’s Bible Class at 10:30 am, followed by a potluck at 12:00 pm. Bring a dish to share, and come to welcome Joshua and his family and enjoy this opportunity to learn more about them!

Through this program—the only one of its kids in the U.S.—together with our congregations, we accomplish three key goals: Care for reserve chaplains and their families and congregations; train and assist local congregations in their care and support of local military members and their families and veterans; serve as a resource to other organizations that provide care to military families and veterans. THIS WEEK ON KFUO.ORG . . . we remember and thank God for the sacrifice of the men and women in our armed forces who have died in our nation’s service as we observe Memorial Day tomorrow. A PRAYER FOR THE ARMED FORCES OF OUR NATION . . . Lord God of hosts, stretch forth Your almighty arm to strengthen and protect those who serve in the armed forces of our country. Support them in times of war, and in times of peace keep them from all evil, giving them courage and loyalty. Grant that in all things they may serve with integrity and with honor; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
