THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Genesis 11:1–9; Acts 2:1–21; John 14:23–31.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . The Spirit of Truth bears witness to Jesus, who is the truth. But the world does not receive the truth. It loves its own and hates those who are of the truth. Just as Jesus was scorned, so is His Church. “The hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God” (John 16:2). Yet it is by Jesus’ suffering and death that we are saved. Therefore we rejoice to share in His sufferings, that we may also share in His resurrection glory (1 Pet. 4:7–14). Through the ministry of the Spirit of Truth, we are cleansed from the deceit of our idols and given a new heart and a new spirit, the heart and Spirit of Christ (Ezek. 36:22–28). He now works in us fervent, self-giving love for one another, love which covers a multitude of sins, “that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen” (1 Pet. 4:11).

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . 1 Peter 4:10—“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” God’s grace is His undeserved mercy toward us. And what do we have that is not a gift flowing from God’s grace? He means for us to use all these gifts in service toward one another. And chief among the ways we serve one another is to support the Church’s work of bringing more of God’s grace to more of God’s people. And that’s what it means to be a steward!

ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Tim & Teri Pollock to the glory of God on the occasion of their wedding anniversary.

MEMBERS OF THE 2016 CONFIRMATION CLASS ARE . . . Mackenzi Bowles; Jake Dyer, and Marissa Russo. Next week is Confirmation Sunday (May 15). In lieu of Bible Class and Sunday School next week, there will be a reception in the Fellowship Hall.

PORK CHOP DINNER . . . sponsored by the Tuscola Moose to benefit the SAM Food Pantry is Sunday, May 8, 2016, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. The cost is $10 per ticket; tickets can be purchased at First Federal of Tuscola or by calling Betsy Stuerke at 2534390.

CONFERENCE SEATING IS FILLING UP . . . for the 2016 Making the Case conference on Saturday, June 11, in Collinsville, Illinois. If you plan to attend, please let Leigh Ann know as soon as possible.  She will submit your registration.  Presentations will make the case for Biblical womanhood, the Lutheran understanding of Law and Gospel, the means of grace, the end times, and more.  2017 is the 500th anniversary of the Reformation so it’s the perfect time to sign-up and learn more about our rich Biblical and Lutheran heritage. But wait, there’s more!! For all college-aged and high school students who wish to attend, the Board of Education has agreed to pay your registration fee (because we’re cool like that and we know you’ll learn a lot.) Check out the poster at the back of church and sign up today. Really. TODAY! Also, we will put together a carpool once we see how many sign up.

CAMP CILCA SCHOLARSHIP . . . The Board of Mission and Evangelism is offering a scholarship for anyone who wants to attend Camp CILCA. Please notify Pastor Braaten or Tammy Kresin of your interest. Scholarships are also available from the LWML. Please notify Irene Wattjes, Theresa Fields, or Joyce Alexander if you plan to attend.

CENTRAL ILLINOIS DISTRICT SCHOLARSHIP SUNDAY . . . was last Sunday, May 1st. We thank everyone who participated with gifts and prayers in support of our C.I.D. seminarians and full-time church worker students. We ask that you continue to pray for the needs of our students throughout the year. If you were not able to make a gift last week you may still do so today or at any time during the year. The need is great.  Please make your check payable to “The C.I.D. Scholarship Fund” and designate it to be used for current needs or to be added to the C.I.D. Scholarship Endowment Fund. Please send your gift to the Central Illinois District LC-MS, 1850 North Grand Avenue West, Springfield, IL  62702-1626. If you are considering making a gift to ministry of appreciated assets or a gift through your estate, you may contact our C.I.D. Planned Gift Counselor, Rev. Charles Olander at (217) 416-8842 or colander@msn.com for assistance. Immanuel office has offering envelopes for your use.

A PRAYER FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT . . . Almighty God, send Your Holy Spirit into our hearts that He may rule and direct us according to Your will, comfort us in all our temptations and afflictions, defend us from all error, and lead us into all truth that we, being steadfast in faith, may increase in all good works and in the end obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
