ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . “The master commended the dishonest manager for his shrewdness” (Luke 16:1–9). The steward’s shrewdness is praiseworthy for two reasons. First, he knew the master would be merciful. He trusted that the master would honor the debts he forgave in the master’s name. In the same way, though we have squandered our heavenly Father’s possessions in selfishness and sin, Jesus is the Steward who has canceled our debt, knowing that His forgiveness will be honored by the Father because of the holy cross. Secondly, the steward was shrewd in using oil and wheat to provide for his earthly welfare. So also do these earthly elements aid us when pressed into heavenly use in the anointing of baptism and the wheat of the Lord’s Supper. Those who have the Sacraments will have an eternal home when their earthly home fails. These provide us aid in times of temptation (1 Cor. 10:6–13). For the Lord is our strength and a shield to all who trust in Him (2 Sam. 22:26–34).

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Luke 16:8 “For the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light.” Money is a tool that can be used for good or wicked purposes. Often unbelievers show more shrewdness in this that we Christians. If we really believe all that stuff we say in the Creed every Sunday . . . won’t that affect how we use our money?

THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Ron & Judy Legg to the glory of God on the occasion of their wedding anniversary.

REACH THE GOAL FOR JOEL BENEFIT BANQUET . . . will be at The Community Building August 8, where doors will open at 5:30 pm with dinner beginning at 6 pm. The crew will sell 300 meal tickets, which can be picked up at Tuscola National Bank or by contacting any of the volunteers. Following dinner community members, even those without dinner tickets, are invited to a live and silent auction at 7:30 pm.

BI-MONTHLY MISSION . . . is today, August 2. All loose cash in the offering will go to SAM Pantry. SAM (Social Action Ministry) food pantry is a ministry of TUMC that serves families all over Douglas County. Unfortunately, in today’s economic environment, people are having to make choices about buying food or paying utility bills or medical bills. The SAM food pantry exists to make that choice a little easier. Staffed by a number of the community churches (including members from Immanuel), patrons receive a supply of food, no more often than once a month, appropriate to the number of persons in their home.

PEACE MEALS . . . August is Immanuel’s month to deliver Peace Meals. Peace Meals delivers Monday–Thursday, beginning at 11:00 am. Team up with someone from church to help get these low-cost, nutritious meals to those in need. Please contact Roger & Wanda Long to volunteer.

THERE ARE STILL . . . openings to put flowers on the Altar. Please sign up on the bulletin board in the hallway by the sanctuary or call the church office. Flowers are $30.00 and can be special ordered. Flowers can be taken home after the Sunday’s service.

SUMMER CONFESSIONS STUDY . . . is underway. We will meet every Wednesday that Pastor is in town at 6:30 pm. We’ll be making our way through the Lutheran Confessions in the Book of Concord. Besides Sunday morning Bible Class, this is the perfect place to ask any and all of your questions about what Lutherans believe, teach, and confess. Join us.
