ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . “Be merciful, even as your Father also is merciful” (Luke 6:36–42). The old Adam in us wants to condemn and seek vengeance. But the Lord says, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay” (Rom. 12:14–21). To condemn, to avenge yourself, is to put yourself in the place of God. It is to fail to trust that He is just. Ultimately, it is to disbelieve that Jesus suffered the full vengeance for all wrongs. Only Christ is merciful as the Father is merciful. He is the one who overcame all evil with the good of His cross, forgiving even His executioners. Jesus is our Joseph, who comforts us with words of pardon and reconciliation (Gen. 50:15–21). He is the One who does not condemn but gives life that runs over. Only through faith in Christ are we sons of the Father—being merciful, forgiving, doing good to our enemies. For in Christ we know that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us (Rom. 8:8–13).

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Romans 8:18 “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” It is very easy to get caught up in the present and lose track of our ultimate destiny in the Kingdom of God. St. Paul encourages us to keep eternity in mind. This certainly has an application to our support for the Gospel—if we keep our focus on “the glory to be revealed” we will see our tithes and offerings in a new light.

REV. DR. EDWARD NAUMANN . . . joins us this weekend to preach in the Divine Service and present in Bible Class. Plan to attend to learn more about Rev. Dr. Naumann’s role as theological educator in the mission field and how he and his wife share the Gospel with the people in the communities in which they serve and live.

SUMMER CONFESSIONS STUDY . . . is underway. We will meet at 6:00 pm every Wednesday that Pastor is in town. We’ll be making our way through the Lutheran Confessions in the Book of Concord. Besides Sunday morning Bible Class, this is the perfect place to ask any and all of your questions about what Lutherans believe, teach, and confess. Join us.

IMMANUEL YOUTH GROUP . . . is scheduled to meet here at church on June 26 at 6:00 pm to travel to Lake Fork Sportsman’s Club north of Atwood as guests of Jack Appleby. Youth Group is open to those entering 8^th grade and to those in high school. Please confirm your attendance prior to June 26.

TUSCOLA’S SPARKS IN THE PARK PARADE . . . We are asking for volunteers to walk in the parade with our church banner and pass out popsicles and pencils. The parade is Saturday, July 9, at 10:00 am. Line-up begins at 9:30 am in Ervin Park. There is a signup sheet in the Narthex for all who are interested. Come and join us!

BOOK OF THE MONTH . . . is Being Lutheran by Pastor A. Trevor Sutton and is available from Concordia Publishing House at www.cph.org. When it comes down to it, being Lutheran is really very simple. It’s about following Jesus. We go where Jesus goes, we listen when Jesus speaks, we trust when Jesus promises. And we live because Jesus lives. Pastor Sutton treats not only Lutheran beliefs, but he also treats the attitudes and mindsets that those beliefs inform. Thus, he divides his book into two parts: what Lutherans challenge (being closed, lukewarm, confused, lazy, and ‘pastel’), followed by what Lutherans cherish (the new, the ordinary, the unresolved, purpose, and the local). This helps explain the quirks of Lutherans—why they are so doctrinally rigorous, yet so fond of paradoxes and unresolved doctrinal tensions; why they seem both conservative and radical; how their theological strictness manifests itself in a spirit of freedom; how they can make such strong supernatural claims, while also focusing on the much-neglected spiritual significance of what is ordinary—while also accounting for what we could describe as the Lutheran theological culture.
