THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Isaiah 65:17–25; 1 Thess 5:1–11; Matthew 25:1–13.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . “The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed” (Luke 17:20). You must use your ears and not your eyes. For God’s kingdom in this world is one of faith, and faith comes by hearing the Word of Christ. The people of Israel, however, wanted to walk not by faith but by sight. When Moses delayed in coming down the mountain, they decided to make a visible god for themselves, the golden calf (Ex. 32:1). Upon such faithless and false worshipers God’s judgment comes. Only on the Last Day will our faith be turned to sight. “For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man” (Matt. 24:27). The Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, and He will gather His people to Himself, both the living and the dead. In a world in which our days are few and full of trouble (Job 14:1), let us comfort one another with these words of the resurrection and the coming of our Lord Jesus.

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . 1 Thess. 4:13, “But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.” Christians are different from unbelievers. Our trust in Christ changes us. Our hope in Christ means that we don’t grieve in the same way that unbelievers grieve: we know what comes after death. We don’t treat our time or money in the same way as unbelievers either. We start each week with a sacrifice of our time as we come to the Lord’s House to hear His Word and receive His Sacraments. And we also set aside a generous, first-fruits proportion of our income for the support of the Lord’s work in His Church. Our faith changes us and our actions . . . we don’t do anything as others do who have no hope.

ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Ray and Norma Uthe to the glory of God in thanksgiving for all veterans.

PICTURE DAY . . . It’s time to get your smile on! We will be updating our church directory in 2020. This will take place the week of January 20, 2020. If you have any pictures of our church family and fun times here at Immanuel over the past five years, we would love to have them to add to the directory (ie youth group, pot lucks, Easter egg hunt, VBS, confirmation, etc). Any questions can be directed to Jaimee Whitson (217) 714-8136 or the Board of Missions. We hope to see you and your smiles there! Coming soon: A sign up sheet posted next to the flower sign up for you to pick a convenient time to be photographed.

  1. JOHN’S MATTOON . . . is hosting their 66th Annual Pancake Supper on Sunday, November 10, 4–7 pm. Cost is $6 for all and 5 and under are free. Proceeds will go to support the Tara Stortzum family. Please call (217) 234-4911 for more information.

MILK FOR KIDS . . . continues to be collected in the jug on the table in the Narthex. Consider contributing to help defray the cost of snack milk for those in need at North Ward. Thank you from the Board of Missions!

GREETERS ARE NEEDED . . . for the West door on December 29.  Please sign the chart across from the mailboxes if you are available.  Thank you for your help.

2020 SCHEDULES . . . have been sent out via email and some have been placed in your boxes. Please let me know if the schedule works for you or needs to be adjusted. You can email, call the church, or leave a message in my box. I will place a copy of the schedules in your boxes when they have all been approved. Don’t forget to sign up for flowers on the newly posted chart.  Thank you for your support and service.

CONTRIBUTION ENVELOPES . . .have been placed in your boxes.  If you did not receive one and should have, please contact the office.

GUEST PRESENTER & POTLUCK . . . On Sunday, November 24, the Board of Christian Education is sponsoring a guest presenter with a potluck following the presentation. Rev. Dr. Ken Schurb will be preaching and giving a special presentation during the Bible Class hour on Justification and Eschatology. Eschatology is the study within the Bible on the last things. It covers topics like temporal death, the resurrection of the dead, the final judgment, the end of the world, eternal damnation and eternal salvation. He will be answering the question of how the doctrine of justification—the teaching that we are saved by grace through faith because of Christ—makes these last things a joyful and hopeful anticipation, not a fearful and hopeless reckoning. The Board of Christian Education is providing the meat, please bring a side dish to share.

A PRAYER FOR THE ARMED FORCES OF OUR NATION . . . Lord God of hosts, stretch forth Your almighty arm to strengthen and protect those who serve in the armed forces of our country. Support them in times of war, and in times of peace keep them from all evil, giving them courage and loyalty. Grant that in all things they may serve with integrity and with honor; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

ISSUES, ETC . . . is your comprehensive source for sews, information, and truth. Issues, Etc. is a radio talk show and podcast produced by Lutheran Public Radio in Collinsville, IL and hosted by LCMS Pastor Todd Wilken.  This week’s subjects include:  Musician Kanye West’s Conversion to Christianity, Jesus in the Koran, The Fall of the Berlin Wall, The Vocation of Soldier and more.  You can listen live or on-demand at www.issuesetc.org and on the LPR mobile app.
