THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Micah 6:6–8; Philippians 1:3–11; Matthew 18:23–35.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . “‘Let there be light,’ and there was light” (Gen. 1:1—2:3). The Father speaks, and it is so. His Word accomplishes what it says. He created all things out of nothing through His Son by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Father’s creative Word became flesh in Jesus Christ, that He might restore fallen creation and save fallen man. To the nobleman whose son was deathly ill, Jesus says, “Go; your son will live” (John 4:46–54). And in the very hour Jesus spoke, the nobleman’s son was made well. The Word of Christ still accomplishes what it says. In baptism, absolution, and the Lord’s Supper, He declares His life–giving forgiveness to you, and it is so. This saving Word of God is the sword of the Spirit by which you are able to fight off all the onslaughts of the devil (Eph. 6:10–17). “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.”

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” We are not our own—God has made us and we are His. He made everything so it is all His. And how kindly He has blessed us with the many gifts of His creation! Faithful stewardship starts right here . . . in the beginning.

ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Josh & Jaimee Whitson to the glory of God on the occasion of their wedding anniversary.

INDIVIDUAL CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION . . . is now offered weekly on Saturdays, 3:30–4:30 pm, when pastor is in town, beginning Saturday, October 22. As Luther wrote in the Large Catechism, “If there is a heart that feels its sin and desires consolation, it has here a sure refuge when it hears in God’s Word that through a man God looses and absolves him from his sins” (Large Catechism, Brief Exhortation, 14). Some members have expressed a desire to make use of this precious gift but do not want to burden pastor’s schedule with a separate meeting in the evenings. Since pastor is in the office on Saturday afternoons, he is setting aside one hour each Saturday afternoon for those to come and receive this wonderful gift. He will be in the sanctuary during that hour. The doors to the sanctuary will be closed. If someone is already with pastor, simply wait in the hallway until that person is finished. If you desire individual confession and absolution on another day, you may still make an appointment with him at your convenience. None of these meetings will be recorded on pastor’s visitation report.

IMMANUEL’S LIVE NATIVITY . . . Immanuel again this year will be hosting a live nativity on Sunday, December 4, 2016, beginning at 4:30 pm. In addition, we will be participating in the Christmas Town Parade on Saturday, December 3. More details to come. Mark your calendars for both events and plan to join as we celebrate the glorious season of the birth of Christ!
