THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Genesis 1:1–2:3; Ephesians 6:10–17; John 4:46–54.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . The Holy Spirit sounds forth the Gospel call: “See, I have prepared my dinner . . . Come to the wedding feast” (Matt. 22:1–14). But many reject this invitation in favor of worldly pursuits. And so the call goes out to others, both the good and the bad. For the wedding invitation is not based on the qualifications of those invited but on the basis of the merits and work of Christ. The feast is free: “He who has no money, come, buy and eat . . . delight yourselves in rich food.” (Is. 55:1–9). Those rejecting the Spirit’s work shall experience God’s wrath and judgment. Those who are not clothed in Christ’s righteousness shall be cast into outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Let us therefore seek the Lord while He may be found, for He will have mercy upon us. Let us redeem the time, being filled with the Spirit, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Eph 5:15–21).

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Isaiah 55:2 “Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?” What Isaiah says here is reminiscent of what Jesus says about putting our earthly wealth in places where “moth and rust destroy.” Where we put the money God has given us to manage says a lot how we actually view life. What do your spending priorities say about what you think is truly important in life?

ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Josh & Jaimee Whitson to the glory of God on the occasion of the anniversary of their wedding.

VOTERS’ ASSEMBLY MEETING . . . is Monday, October 18, at 7:30 pm. Just a reminder that any voting member who is absent from the voters’ meetings for a full year without a valid excuse shall have his/her name removed from the roster of voting members. Those who are 65 and older can submit a written request to have their name placed on the senior voting member list and will be automatically excused. If any senior member is unsure whether or not there is a written request on file, please contact the office. If any member has been removed from the roster of voting members, he/she can be reinstated by a request to the elders and attendance at the voters’ meeting approving that request.

THE CILCA RUN 5K . . . is October 23 at 10:00 am. Sign up at www.cilca.org/homecoming. Trails, creek beds, mud, steep hills, sand, stairs and scenic views.  You will get wet!  An alternate route will be available for anyone who does not wish to climb through the creek bed. Registration is $30, for runners ages 6–18 the cost is $10. Runners under 6 are free. The race will be followed by a vendor fair, live music, games, food, drinks, bonfire and “German Beverages” from 11:00 am–1:30 pm.

VENDOR FAIR AT CAMP CILCA! . . . Are you a craftsman, artist, or vendor? Contact the camp office to register for the vendor fair during the CILCA Homecoming on October 23 from 11:00 am–2:00 pm. $15 gets you a table and two chairs and access to over 100 Homecoming attendees. The vendor fair will be outdoors, or in the Dining Hall in case of rain or cold. Email director@cilca.org to reserve your table or call 217-487-7497

WHY? . . . Why does the Sanctus blend two separate parts of Scripture? The Sanctus, so named because it is Latin for “Holy,” and in “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Sabaoth,” appropriately precedes the words of Christ’s institution of the Sacrament of the Altar, precisely because it serves to blend two parts and themes of Scripture together. The first part is the vision of Isaiah, in which the seraphim cry “Holy, Holy, Holy” to one another, smoke arises, the lintels shake, and the prophet is overawed in his confrontation with the majesty of the Triune God. So ought we to be overawed by an awareness that we here are in the presence of Almighty God. The second part is from the procession of Palm Sunday, when the children joyously cry out “Hosanna” to Christ, who rides a donkey into Jerusalem to do the work of salvation. So ought we joyously cry, for in the Supper Christ comes to us to save us. The blending of these two seemingly disjunct passages provides a poignant reminder to us that at the altar the majesty of Almighty God is bound to the Sacrament, which is given for us and for our salvation.

IMMANUEL’S 125TH ANNIVERSARY COOKBOOK . . . The Board of Mission and Evangelism have prepared a cookbook for Immanuel’s 125th anniversary, which is next July.
