THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Rev 14:6–7; Rom 3:19–28; Matt 11:12–19.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . The Pharisees ask a Law question. Jesus asks a Gospel question. The Pharisees seek to test Jesus in His own words. Jesus seeks to “test” them in the saving reality of who He is as the Messiah (Matt. 22:34–46). The Law requires you to “fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul” and to “love the sojouner” (Deut. 10:12–21). Failure to keep the Law perfectly brings judgment. On the other hand, the Gospel brings the grace of God given by Jesus Christ, that you may be blameless in the day of His return (1 Cor. 1:1–9). Jesus is David’s Son yet David’s Lord, true God and true man. He is Love incarnate who fulfilled all the demands of God’s Law on our behalf, that we might be saved from the Law’s condemnation and sanctified in the Gospel’s forgiveness. Thereby we see that “God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord” (1 Cor. 1:9).

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Matthew 22:40 “On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” We serve God and our neighbor through the various vocations (holy callings) that God has given us. We do not need to go searching for or inventing good works: God has given us roles to fill in Home, Church, and Society and when we work hard at them as faithful Christians, God-pleasing works are the result.

ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Jim Harbaugh to the glory of God in memory of Ethel Harbaugh and Ethel Rahn on the occasion of their birthdays.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS NEEDED . . . We are still in need of one teacher for the 4th–6th grade class. If this position is not filled those grades will not have Sunday School. Also beginning in January, we will need one teacher for the 1st–3rd grade class.

THE YOUTH GROUP EVENT . . . for October is set for Sunday, October 26, 4:00 pm—6:00 pm. We will be joining the Youth Group from Grace Lutheran Church, Paris, Illinois, for some hiking and games at their park facilities. We will be leaving the church at 2:45 pm and we will be back home no later than 8:00 pm. Please notify Pastor Braaten by e-mail that you plan to attend by Monday, October 20.

PEACE MEAL BINGO . . . People over 60 are invited to play free bingo with prizes on Friday, October 24, after Peace Meal. Reservations must be made by noon on Thursday, October 23, to (217) 253-2278. The meal will be turkey with all of the trimmings. The meal cost is a donation of $3.50. Join us for the food, fellowship, and fun. Hope to see you there.
