THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Deut. 10:12–21; 1 Corinthians 1:4–9; Matthew 22:34–46.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . “Do not put yourself forward in the king’s presence” (Prov. 25:6–14). Rather, take the lowest position at the table. Humble yourself before Him. For your place is not for you to take but for Him to give. Conduct yourself with all lowliness and gentleness, bearing with one another in love (Eph. 4:1–6), that the King may give you glory in the presence of those at the table with you. “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Luke 14:1–11). Is this not the way of Christ? He is the one who took the lowest place, who humbled Himself even to the point of death for us. He is now exalted to the highest place at the right hand of the Father that penitent believers may be exalted together with Him in the resurrection. To the humble at His Supper He says, “Friend, move up higher,” giving you His very body and blood for your forgiveness that you may ascend to take part in the great wedding feast which has no end.

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Luke 14:11 “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” The Kingdom of God is always like this. We must die in baptism in order to truly live. We must be humbled so that we can be exalted. And when we give away, we receive much more than we bargained for: peace of mind, contentment, joy.

ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Gary & Becky Kappes to the glory of God on the occasion of their wedding anniversary.

OCTOBER BI-MONTHLY MISSION . . . is Sunday, October 3. October’s bi-monthly offering has been designated for CID Campus Ministries (given to one campus ministry per year on a rotation). This year’s offering will be given to University Lutheran Church at Eastern Illinois University, Charleston. Checks may be made out to Immanuel Lutheran Church. An envelope will be placed in your member mailbox next week for your convenience. Your generosity is truly appreciated.

THE OCTOBER CALENDAR . . . with events, birthdays, and anniversaries is now available on the table across from the church mailboxes.

COME TO BIBLE CLASS . . . We have just begun a study of Proverbs. We are only six chapters in, so it’s still a great time to join us for this study. We hope you will join us.

CONTRIBUTIONS & ATTENDANCE . . . Total YTD offerings, $111,278.00; budgeted YTD offerings, $113,336.00. Average weekend attendance for August, 57.

WHY? . . . Why is the altar in the middle? Churches vary greatly in architectural style, and the style of the interior is generally somewhat representative of what that church believes. Some churches have a very prominent pulpit, elevated above everything else and planted right in the center. This no doubt is meant to proclaim that the preaching of the Word of God is of primary importance. Indeed, Lutheran churches have historically had high pulpits, requiring many steps for the preacher to ascend. Yet in Lutheran churches, as high and prominent as the pulpit may be, it is not typically in the center. Rather, it is off to one side, and the altar stands alone in the center. This sends a strong visual message: the preaching of the sermon, as important and sacred a thing as it is, is not as central to the Church’s life as the Sacrament of the Altar. For the sermon preaches Christ, but the Sacrament is Christ, as He said, “This is My Body.” Therefore, the pulpit is appropriately placed to one side, that the preacher may refer to that which is central, namely, Christ in His Body and Blood; and the altar is placed in the center, and the elements for the Sacrament are placed in the center of the altar. This puts Christ in the center of our churches, of our worship, and of our lives.

MONTHLY BIBLE CHALLENGE . . The October reading list is now available in the Narthex and online! THERE ARE OPENINGS . . . on the flower schedule for September and October. Take a look on the bulletin board across from the member mailboxes to see what opportunities are still available. Thank you!

MEET OUR NEW MISSIONARY . . . The Naumann family are no longer missionaries in the field. They are now back stateside to do the work of the church here. The Board of Mission and Evangelism has adopted a new missionary in Japan: Rev. Dr. Daniel and Joan Jastram. He serves as a missionary on behalf of The Lutheran Church— Missouri Synod (LCMS) in Asia, where he lives with his wife in Tokyo, Japan. In this role, Dr. Jastram coordinates efforts to make Lutheran resources of theology and worship available in all of Asia. He monitors and reports the progress of existing work, while also developing, coordinating and supporting new work
