THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Deut. 10:12–21; 1 Corinthians 1:4–9; Matthew 22:34–46.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . “Do not put yourself forward in the king’s presence” (Prov. 25:6–14). Rather, take the lowest position at the table. Humble yourself before Him. For your place is not for you to take but for Him to give. Conduct yourself with all lowliness and gentleness, bearing with one another in love (Eph. 4:1–6), that the King may give you glory in the presence of those at the table with you. “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Luke 14:1–11). Is this not the way of Christ? He is the one who took the lowest place, who humbled Himself even to the point of death for us. He is now exalted to the highest place at the right hand of the Father that penitent believers may be exalted together with Him in the resurrection. To the humble at His Supper He says, “Friend, move up higher,” giving you His very body and blood for your forgiveness that you may ascend to take part in the great wedding feast which has no end.

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Luke 14:11 “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” The Kingdom of God is always like this. We must die in baptism in order to truly live. We must be humbled so that we can be exalted. And when we give away, we receive much more than we bargained for: peace of mind, contentment, joy.

ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Josh & Jaimee Whitson to the glory of God on the occasion of the anniversary of their wedding.

THE NEXT VOTERS’ ASSEMBLY MEETING . . . is Monday, October 21, at 7:30 pm. Please submit Voters’ meeting material to the church office by Wednesday, October 16.

REMINDER: VOTERS’ ASSEMBLY MEETING . . . is Monday, October 21, at 7:30 pm. Just a reminder that any voting member who is absent from the voters’ meetings for a full year without a valid excuse shall have his/her name removed from the roster of voting members. Those who are 65 and older can submit a written request to have their name placed on the senior voting member list and will be automatically excused. If any senior member is unsure whether or not there is a written request on file, please contact the office. If any member has been removed from the roster of voting members, he/she can be reinstated by a request to the elders and attendance at the voters’ meeting approving that request.

OKTOBERFEST . . . The Twenty-fourth Annual Oktoberfest, October 13–15, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kewanee, IL, will be hosting Rev. Dr. James Bushur, who is the Carl and Erna Weinrich Associate Professor of New Testament and Early Church Studies at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana. His topic will be “The Sermon in the Early Church.” You may register at this website: https://www.stpaulskewanee.org/oktoberfest-registration.html
