THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Proverbs 25:6–14; Ephesians 4:1–6; Luke 14:1–11.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . A large funeral procession carrying the only son of a widow is confronted by another large procession, Jesus and His followers. Death and Life meet face to face at the gate of the city (Luke 7:11–17). Filled with compassion, Jesus comes into direct contact with our mortality in order to overcome it. He touches the coffin and speaks His creative words of life, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” Jesus does what is neither expected nor requested. For through Christ, God the Father “is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think” (Eph. 3:14–21). Jesus bore our death in His body that we may share in His resurrection. Even as Elijah stretched himself out three times over the Zarephath woman’s son (2 Kings 17:17–24), God stretched Himself out over us in the threefold application of His name in the baptismal water, breathing new and everlasting life into us. “To Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Ephesians 3:14-15 “For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.” We have a Father in heaven. He cares for us. He knows how to give us all good things, beginning with our salvation in Christ Jesus. This knowledge frees us from worry and anxiety. Jesus returned to this theme again and again, and we should take Him at His Word.

ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Ron & Judy Legg to the glory of God on the occasion of Ron’s birthday.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS NEEDED . . . We are still in need of one teacher for the 4th–6th grade class. If this position is not filled those grades will not have Sunday School.

PASTOR WILL BE AWAY . . . for the Central Illinois District Fall Pastors’ Conference on Monday, October 6–Wednesday, October 8. If you have an emergency or need to get in touch with Pastor Braaten, you may call his mobile phone, or contact one of the Elders.

BI-MONTHLY MISSION . . . is Sunday, October 5, LWML Sunday. All loose cash in the offering will go to support Immanuel’s LWML Chapter. For more information about the LWML and how it serves the church and the community, or to inquire about how you can join, speak with Joyce Alexander, Irene Wattjes, or Lauren Braaten.
