THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Proverbs 25:6–14; Ephesians 4:1–6; Luke 14:1–11.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . A large funeral procession carrying the only son of a widow is confronted by another large procession, Jesus and His followers. Death and Life meet face to face at the gate of the city (Luke 7:11–17). Filled with compassion, Jesus comes into direct contact with our mortality in order to overcome it. He touches the coffin and speaks His creative words of life, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” Jesus does what is neither expected nor requested. For through Christ, God the Father “is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think” (Eph. 3:14–21). Jesus bore our death in His body that we may share in His resurrection. Even as Elijah stretched himself out three times over the Zarephath woman’s son (2 Kings 17:17–24), God stretched Himself out over us in the threefold application of His name in the baptismal water, breathing new and everlasting life into us. “To Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Ephesians 3:14–15 “For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.” We have a Father in heaven. He cares for us. He knows how to give us all good things, beginning with our salvation in Christ Jesus. This knowledge frees us from worry and anxiety. Jesus returned to this theme again and again, and we should take Him at His Word.

THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Bob and Joan Vukelich to the glory of God for blessings received.

CID FALL PASTORS’ CONFERENCE . . . is this week, Monday, October 7–Wednesday, October 9, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mattoon. Pastor will be attending the sessions during the day but will be at home in the evenings. In case of emergencies, you can reach him on his mobile phone, and he will get back to you as soon as he can.

COME TO BIBLE CLASS . . . we began a new study on the book of Ephesians. The apostle Paul wrote Ephesians to the churches around Ephesus (Acts 19) to display the scope of God’s eternal plan for all humanity—for Jews and Gentiles alike. This is the mystery of God, hidden for ages but now made known in Jesus Christ. The first three chapters focus on what Christians should believe, unfolding the glorious riches of God’s grace in Christ. Dead sinners are made alive and gain eternal salvation “by grace . . . through faith” (2:8). The last three chapters explain the implications of God’s grace for the church, for individuals, and for families. This second section comes to a climax with a command to stand with the armor of God against the devil.

OCTOBER BI-MONTHLY MISSION . . . is today, October 6. October’s bi-monthly offering has been designated for CID Campus Ministries (given to one campus ministry per year on a rotation). This year’s offering will be given to University Lutheran Church at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Checks may be made out to Immanuel Lutheran Church. An envelope has been placed in your member mailbox for your convenience. Your generosity is truly appreciated.

COFFEE COMMITTEE . . . needs a volunteer for November 3. If you can help, please call the office and let Connie know (217-253-4341). Thank you.

OKTOBERFEST . . . The Twenty-fourth Annual Oktoberfest, October 13–15, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kewanee, IL, will be hosting Rev. Dr. James Bushur, who is the Carl and Erna Weinrich Associate Professor of New Testament and Early Church Studies at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana. His topic will be “The Sermon in the Early Church.” You may register at this website: https://www.stpaulskewanee.org/oktoberfest-registration.html

THE OCTOBER CALENDAR . . . with events, birthdays, and anniversaries is now available on the table across from the church mailboxes.
