ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . “You cannot serve God and money” (Matt. 6:24‑34), for they require two contrary forms of service. Worry is the worship given to the false god of mammon, an unbelieving anxiousness and focus on the things of this world. Faith is the worship of the true God, a confident trust that He is a loving Father who will care for all of our needs in both body and soul. The widow of Zarephath served God—that is, she believed the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah that the bin of flour would not be used up nor would the jar of oil run dry (1 Kings 17:8–16). He who feeds the birds and clothes the flowers will certainly provide for our daily needs. For He has already provided for our eternal needs, clothing us with Christ’s righteousness in Baptism and feeding us His body and blood for our forgiveness. With such confidence we are liberated from worry and freed to do good with our material resources, especially to those who are of the household of faith (Gal. 5:25–6:10).
THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Matthew 6:25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on.” Our anxieties and fears all come down to one thing: worrying that we will not get our way. But God is our loving heavenly Father: He will always care for us and His will is always best. That confidence should set us free from worry and free us for service according to the callings God has given us.

COME TO BIBLE CLASS . . . we began a new study on the book of Ephesians. The apostle Paul wrote Ephesians to the churches around Ephesus (Acts 19) to display the scope of God’s eternal plan for all humanity—for Jews and Gentiles alike. This is the mystery of God, hidden for ages but now made known in Jesus Christ. The first three chapters focus on what Christians should believe, unfolding the glorious riches of God’s grace in Christ. Dead sinners are made alive and gain eternal salvation “by grace . . . through faith” (2:8). The last three chapters explain the implications of God’s grace for the church, for individuals, and for families. This second section comes to a climax with a command to stand with the armor of God against the devil.
OCTOBER BI-MONTHLY MISSION . . . is Sunday, October 6. October’s bi-monthly offering has been designated for CID Campus Ministries (given to one campus ministry per year on a rotation). This year’s offering will be given to University Lutheran Church at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Checks may be made out to Immanuel Lutheran Church. OKTOBERFEST . . . The Twenty-fourth Annual Oktoberfest, October 13–15, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kewanee, IL, will be hosting Rev. Dr. James Bushur, who is the Carl and Erna Weinrich Associate Professor of New Testament and Early Church Studies at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana. CID ENDOWMENT FUND . . . The Fund promotes and encourages Christian Stewards through special gifts and bequests. The Central Illinois District Endowment Fund, Inc. was established for the solicitation, investment and disbursement of gifts, grants, devises and bequests to the Central Illinois District. It provides an avenue for the gifts to be received and managed independent of the regular District budget. These funds are used to further the Lord’s work primarily in the area of scholarships for the education of full time church workers attending the Concordia University System, Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana, or Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, pursuing careers as ordained pastors or other full time church work professions.
