THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Proverbs 4:10–23; Galatians 5:16–24; Luke 17:11–19.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . The Law cannot help us or give us life. Rather, it confines everyone under sin as wounded and naked before God (Gal. 3:15–22). So it is that two figures of the Law, the priest and the Levite, passed by the injured man on the side of the road (Luke 10:23–37). Only the promised Seed of Abraham can rescue us and make us righteous before God. Only the Samaritan, our Lord Jesus, had compassion. He came down to us in our lost and dying condition, pouring on the oil and wine of the Sacraments. He placed us on His own animal, bearing our sin and brokenness in His body on the cross to restore us. Jesus brought us to the inn, that is, the Church, and gave the innkeeper two denarii, that His double forgiveness might continue to be ministered to us. In this way the Lord, by whose Law we are torn and stricken, heals us and revives us by His Gospel and raises us up with Himself on the third day, that we may live in His sight (Hos. 6:1–6).

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Luke 10:25 “And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, ‘Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’” That’s just not a good question! Doing and inheriting just don’t go together: what can you do to inherit the English throne? Nothing. Inheriting is about birth right; doing is about merit. We receive eternal life by birth right in our Baptism into Christ. All of our doing in the Kingdom of God flows from this, from who we are by our new birth. It can never be the other way around.

BI-MONTHLY MISSION . . . The Bi-Monthly Mission for August goes to SAM Pantry. An envelope designated for SAM Pantry has been placed in your mailbox. Please make your check out to Immanuel Lutheran Church. Thank you!

NORTHWARD MILK MONEY . . . The jug to collect milk money for Northward, will be set out since school has begun. The Board of Mission and Evangelism has been in contact with the school about where the funds are needed most. So, the funds collected in the milk money jug will go toward the “Help A Child Fund” this year. Thank you for your ongoing support.

BUNCO IS BACK! . . .  In keeping with what we have done in the past, meeting on the first Sunday of each month, the ladies of Immanuel are invited to play Bunco on Sunday, September 5 at 6:30 PM. No experience necessary — it’s an easy game to learn. We will be meeting in the church fellowship hall. Please bring a snack (and a friend or two!) and be ready to laugh!

FIRST DAY OF SUNDAY SCHOOL . . . is Sunday, September 12. The opening begins at 10:20 am in the Sanctuary. Music will be in the choir loft. And then classes in the Sunday School classrooms.

YOUTH GROUP EVENT . . . is today. We will be going fishing at Wimple Park. Meet at the park with your fishing gear at 5:00 pm. Bait will be provided. If you don’t have poles and tackle, we’ll have extras. Please RSVP so we know how many to provide food for (unless you want to cook up the fish you catch!).

THE SEPTEMBER CALENDAR . . . with birthdays and anniversaries is available on the table across from members’ mailboxes.

CAMP CILCA SCRAMBLE GOLF OUTING . . . is Friday, September 24! Be sure to save the date. We will be back at Hickory Point, Forsythe, IL. Shotgun start at 1:00 pm. Put together a team or be placed on a team. Lutheran Legacy Foundation has prepaid for Golf and dinner so the sponsorships and money you give will go right to CILCA and the CILCA Endowment. While $60 will cover your costs, you are free to give what you like! Checki-in begins at 11AM, lunch on your own. Get registered by emailing Pastor Daniel Smith at revdms@gmail.com today. See CILCA.ORG for more info.

WHY? . . .  Why do we confess the Creed after the hearing of the Gospel? During the Sunday Divine Service, the Nicene Creed is confessed after the Gospel has been heard. Thus we express our belief that the Christian faith which we confess is given by the Gospel we have heard. In some settings of the Divine Service, the Creed is confessed before the Sermon, and in others, it comes after the Sermon. In the former case, where the Creed comes before the Sermon, we express the conviction that the Sermon should be rooted in the Gospel as we have confessed it, and that it should not deviate from this faith. In the latter case, however, where the Creed comes after the Sermon, this former conviction is simply assumed to be the case. At the same time, another conviction is implied, namely, that the Gospel when it is preached is as much the Gospel as when it is heard in the Readings. In either case, to confess the Creed immediately upon hearing the Word is to imply that faith comes by hearing, that is, to acknowledge the power of the Word to create the faith we confess.

THERE ARE OPENINGS . . . on the flower schedule for September and October. Take a look on the bulletin board across from the member mailboxes to see what opportunities are still available. Thank you!
