THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . .Numbers 21:4–9; 1 Cor 1:18–25; John 12:20–33.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . A man who was deaf and therefore also had an impediment in his speech was brought to Jesus (Mark 7:31–37). In the same way, all are by nature deaf toward God and therefore also unable to confess the faith rightly. For “faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Rom. 10:9–17). Jesus put His fingers into the man’s ears, and He spat and touched His tongue. Even so in Holy Baptism, water sanctified by the words of Jesus’ mouth is applied to us; and the finger of God, that is, the life–giving Holy Spirit (2 Cor. 3:4–11) is put into our ears in the hearing of the baptismal Gospel. Jesus’ sighing “Ephphatha” opened the man’s ears, and his tongue was loosed to speak plainly as Isaiah prophesied of the Messiah, “In that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book” (Is. 29:18–24) So also, He who sighed and breathed His last on the cross for us has given us to hear and believe in Him and has opened our lips that our mouths may declare His praise.

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . 2 Corinthians 3:5 “Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God.” We are not sufficient, not enough, not capable in and of ourselves. But God gives us what is enough, what is sufficient, and makes us capable. That is the beginning of wisdom: we are utterly dependent on God’s mercy. Our whole Christian life flows forth from this dependence.

THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . were given by the Dallas Family to the glory of God on the occasion of Jeremy and Holly’s wedding.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS NEEDED . . . for the 2014–2015 Academic Year. If you are willing to teach for one, two, or three months out of the year, please contact Pastor Braaten. We are still in need of one teacher for the 4th–6th grade class. If this position is not filled those grades will not have Sunday School. Rally Day for Sunday School is on Sunday, September 7, and classes begin on Sunday, September 14.

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION . . .  Grace Lutheran Church,Paris, IL will celebrate their 75th anniversary as a congregation. Please join us on Sunday, September 14, 2014 at 2pm for a special community service. An old fashioned Ice Cream Social and Open House at the Child Development Center will follow the 2 pm service. Everyone is cordially invited to share in this milestone. For more information please contact Pastor Ryan Fehrmann at (217) 466-1215 or graceparis1@mac.com.

TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE . . . What does Monical’s Pizza have in common with SAM Food Pantry? On Tuesday, September 9, Monical’s Pizza will donate 20% of your bill to SAM Food Pantry. There are green papers on a table in the Narthex in order to take advantage of this offer, which is good on carry-outs as well, but you must mention this when you place your order. So enjoy a pizza and help out SAM Food Pantry at the same time.

CAMP CILCA GOLF OUTING . . . Come and enjoy a relaxing round of golf with your friends in support of Camp CILCA, the CID’s Lutheran Camp. The format is a scramble. So organize your own team of four or just come and be put on a team. The cost is $50.00 and that covers your golf, cart, meal, and prizes. The outing is at The Rail (Springfield, Illinois) on Friday, September 19, 1:00 pm. Contact Pastor Daniel Smith for details or to register (pastordan@grics.net).

OPEN HOUSE AT THE PARSONAGE . . . Please join us this Sunday afternoon 3:00 pm‑5:00 pm, for an Open House at the Parsonage, and let us say thank you for your care and generosity throughout the year.

SPIRITUAL & RELIGIOUS . . . Issues, Etc. is a radio talk show hosted by LCMS Pastor, Rev. Todd Wilken, and produced by Lutheran Public Radio in Collinsville, Illinois. This week’s topics include: The Book of Galatians, The Funeral Liturgy, The Smalcald Articles, Holy Cross Day and more. You can listen on-demand at www.issuesetc.org.

CLASSICAL CONVERSATIONS COOP . . . In early July, Immanuel was asked if it would be willing to let a local, in-town, home school coop use it’s education wing one day per week for twenty-four weeks during the 2014–2015 academic year. After consultation with the Boards of Elders and Trustees, it was brought to the July Voters Meeting, which decided that it would allow the group to use our facilities. This group will meet at Immanuel on Mondays, 9:00 am–3:00 pm, for twelve consecutive weeks beginning this Monday, September 8, and for twelve weeks after the new year. Our congregation still has priority of use, but if you notice vehicles at the church on a Monday and are wondering what’s going on, we wanted to let you know that it is likely this group meeting.
