THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Isaiah 29:17–24; 2 Corinthians 3:4–11; Mark 7:31–37.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . “And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard” (Gen. 4:1–15). For unlike Abel, Cain’s offering did not proceed from a heart that revered and trusted in the Lord. Thus, the lowly tax collector who prayed, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” was the one who went down to his house justified before God, not the respectable, outwardly righteous Pharisee who trusted in himself and his own good living (Luke 18:9–14). “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Eph. 2:1–10). The one who penitently despairs of his own righteousness and relies completely on the atoning mercy of God in Christ is the one who is declared righteous. For Christ died for our sins and rose again the third day (1 Cor. 15:1–10). Therefore, “everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Luke 18:11-12 “The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’” The Pharisees got so much right and so much wrong. It’s a good thing for this Pharisee to be faithful to his wife and faithful in his giving to the Lord’s work, but none of it is of any avail if it proceeds from a prideful heart!

THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Matthew & Terra Waldrop in thanksgiving to God on the occasion of their wedding anniversary.

PARENT-PASTOR CATECHISM MEETING . . . Sunday, August 23, 11:30 am, in the Fellowship Hall to discuss what we will learn during the year, what is expected of the student, and what your responsibilities as a parent of a catechism student are.

PEACE MEALS . . . August is Immanuel’s month to deliver Peace Meals. Peace Meals delivers Monday–Friday; meal pick-up time is 10:30 am. Team up with someone from church to help get these low-cost, nutritious meals to those in need. Please contact Roger & Wanda Long to volunteer. There are a few days left.

UPDATE FROM PASTOR NAUMANN . . . Emily was born just a few short weeks after we arrived in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Now she is four years old. At that time we expected to live in Colombo for 1-2 years, before moving to India. Now after 4 years, I have been instructed to move to India as soon as possible, to join the faculty of Concordia Theological Seminary, Nagercoil. Time will tell if God will open this door for us, as the move is still contingent on visas and the lifting of travel restrictions due to COVID-19. Please pray for us that the Lord’s will may be done. In the meantime, I continue working as LCMS missionary to India from Sri Lanka. Read more in the newsletter here: August 2020 Newsletter (5 MB). Thank you for your ongoing prayers and support. Your servant in Christ, Pastor Edward Naumann

IMMANUEL MEMORIAL GARDEN . . . The church is in the process of establishing a memorial garden to recognize and remember our members: those who have gone to their eternal reward and even those who now stand beside us. The focal point of the garden (located between the south classrooms and the sidewalk) will be a 5 foot, 8 inch granite cross with a message that reads: “Dedicated to those who came before us, those who stand beside us, and those who carry on after we are gone.” The project is funded by current memorial funds. Around that cross extends a cross-shaped sidewalk edged by granite pavers. We hope that past and current members will choose to honor their loved ones by purchasing a granite paver with their names inscribed. The cost for a paver is $150.00. Purchase forms are available in the church office. Questions may be addressed to the Memorial Fund Committee (Darrell Ford and Steve Hilgendorf).

2020–2021 SUNDAY SCHOOL REGISTRATION . . . is now open. Please register your child(ren) online at this address: https://wp.me/p4MrsX-15F. Classes begin on Sunday, September 13.

CID GOLF FUNDRAISER . . . the Lutheran Legacy Foundation is hosting a golf scramble at Hickory Point in Forsyth, Illinois on Friday, September 25. The fee is $60.00 with any further donations going directly to Camp CILCA and CILCA Endowment Fund. You may email your registration to: revdms@gmail.com.

HOLY COMMUNION . . . The offer still stands that if you desire the Holy Communion, you can make an appointment with Pastor to receive the Lord’s Supper either at church or in your home until services resume.

SERVICES ONLINE . . . A copy of the service bulletin, which includes all the responses and the hymns, is available at Immanuel’s website under the Sermons tab by clicking on the button labeled PDF. This video option will continue to be made available until our usual service times resume. You can access these online services in three places:

  1. On Immanuel’s Facebook page
  2. On Immanuel’s Website under the Sermons tab
  3. On Immanuel’s YouTube channel

MEMORY WORK . . . If a Sunday School student has been able to learn the next level of the Catechism Learn-By-Heart Program and would like to recite it to Pastor, you can schedule a meeting with him to do this through Zoom, Skype, or Facetime. Contact Pastor by e-mail or phone.

CHANGES IN MANDATED REPORTER LAW . . . The state of Illinois recently made significant changes to the mandated reporter law. By law, any person affiliated with the church who, in their role, comes into contact with children, either in a paid position or as a volunteer, is now a mandated reporter. Mandated reporters are required to call the DCFS Hotline when they have reasonable cause to believe that a child known to them in their professional or official capacity may be an abused or neglected child. As such, s/he must undergo training within three months of first serving. This is only a training session not a background check. This new law would include the following at Immanuel: all Sunday School teachers, VBS volunteers, youth group chaperones, and those on Altar Guild who work with the Jr. Altar Guild. To that end, we ask that those individuals in the groups listed, follow THIS LINK to take the online training. This training takes roughly 60 minutes to complete. Upon completion of the training, a certificate is awarded which will need to be printed off and a copy be given to Pastor to keep on file. For those who are unable to access this online training at home, time will be available for you to complete this in the church office. Please find time to complete the online training as soon as possible. While we understand that this may be a burden for some, please know that we are willing to help you get the necessary training so that we as a church are compliant with this new law. If you have any questions or concerns, please talk with one of the members of the Board of Christian Education or Pastor. Thank you!
