THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Jeremiah 23:16–29; Romans 8:12–17; Matthew 7:15–23.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . In the Garden of Eden, our first parents received food freely from the gracious hand of God, apart from any burdensome work (Gen 2:7–17). But after the fall, food would be received only through toil and labor. The curse declared, “By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground . . .” (Gen. 3:19). In other words, “The wages of sin is death” (Rom. 6:23). But into this wilderness world came Jesus the Messiah to restore creation. Having compassion on the weary multitudes, He renewed the bounty of Eden on the third day, freely granting an abundance of bread to the 4,000 (Mark 8:1–9). So also our Lord Jesus, having endured the burden of our sin, was raised on the third day to bring us back to Paradise. He now miraculously turns the bread of death into the Bread of Life in the Sacrament, giving us His very body and blood for our forgiveness. For “the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 6:23).

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Romans 6:19 “For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.” To be sanctified means to be set aside for God’s purposes. St. Paul encourages us to see ourselves, our bodies, our souls, and all that we are as set aside for God’s work—in all that we do whether in the home, church, or society at large.

THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Greg & Donna Campbell to the glory of God on the occasion of Gunnar’s birthday.

PASTOR BRAATEN AND HIS FAMILY WILL BE ON VACATION . . . Sunday, July 15 following Bible Class through Friday, July 20. If you need assistance you may contact him on his mobile phone or call one of the Elders (Jack Appleby, Kenny Kresin, Greg Nau, or Mark Whitson).

REMINDER: VOTERS’ ASSEMBLY MEETING . . . is Monday, July 16, at 7:30 PM. Just a reminder that any voting member who is absent from the voters’ meetings for a full year without a valid excuse shall have his/her name removed from the roster of voting members. Those who are 65 and older can submit a written request to have their name placed on the senior voting member list and will be automatically excused. If any senior member is unsure whether or not there is a written request on file, please contact the office. If any member has been removed from the roster of voting members, he/she can be reinstated by a request to the elders and attendance at the voters’ meeting approving that request.

CAMP CILCA SCHOLARSHIP . . . The Board of Missions and Evangelism is offering scholarships for anyone wanting to attend Camp CILCA. Camp CILCA Summer 2018 brochures can be found on the table across from member mailboxes. Please notify Pastor Braaten or Jaimee Whitson of your interest.

PEACE MEALS . . . August is Immanuel’s month to deliver Peace Meals. Peace Meals delivers Monday–Friday; meal pick-up time is 10:30 AM. Team up with someone from church to help get these low-cost, nutritious meals to those in need. Please contact Roger & Wanda Long to volunteer.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL . . . at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (2 miles east of Dorans) on Monday, July 23, serving from 4:30 PM–7:00 PM. A free-will offering will be taken. Monies received will go to assist with medical expenses of Ed Smith, a brother to Tammy Weber, one of their members. Menu includes chicken salad sandwiches, ham sandwiches, turkey sandwiches, potato salad, homemade pies, beverage, and ice cream.

THERE ARE OPENINGS . . . on both the flower and greeter schedules. Take a look on the bulletin board across from the member mailboxes to see what opportunities are still available. Thank you!

THIS WEEK’S HYMN OF THE DAY . . . “What is the ultimate purpose of my being, existing, and living?” Is your answer man-centered or Christ-centered? God made everything for His own sake. He redeemed and sanctified us for His glory and praise. Our ultimate goal is Christ, living in his forgiveness and love, all to the glory, laud, and honor of His holy name. Today’s hymn was written by Johann Jacob Schütz and was welcomed in the Lutheran Church as a strong, doctrinally pure hymn of praise. It teaches us why God is worthy to receive all praise and glory and acknowledges Him as the highest good. The repetition of the grand refrain summarizes the hymn and reinforces its theme, helping the singer remember that all praise and glory belong to God!

THIS WEEK ON KFUO.ORG . . . begins a new study on the book of Ephesians on Thy Strong Word (weekdays at 11:00 a.m. CT)., dig into the Daily Lectionary readings from Galatians with Rev. Jonathan Fisk on Sharper Iron (weekdays at 8:00 a.m. CT), and hear from Rev. Dr. Edward Naumann about life on the mission field in South Asia on The Coffee Hour (7/19 at 9:15 a.m. CT). Hear these programs on demand at kfuo.org or wherever you get your podcasts!
