THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Exodus 20:1–17; Romans 6:3–11; Matthew 5:20–26.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . The Lord called fishermen to be fishers of men (Luke 5:1–11). The net they would use is the message of the cross, which is foolishness and a stumbling block to the world (1 Cor. 1:18–25). The power of God to save is not in spectacular signs like wind and fire and earthquakes (1 Kings 19:11–21), nor is it to be found in human intelligence and wisdom. The power of God to save comes in the still, small voice of the preaching of Christ crucified. In worldly darkness the disciples could catch nothing. But in the light of Christ, whose Word was attached to the water, the boats were filled with fish. So it is that in Baptism you have been drawn in to the ship of the Church. Though the nets are breaking and some who hear the Word do not believe, pastors continue to cast the net of the Gospel and the Sacraments, that Christians may abide in the boat of the Church and that we may be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks a reason for the hope that is in us (1 Peter 3:8–15).

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Luke 5:5 “And Simon answered, ‘Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.’” All our toil, all our work, all our efforts mean nothing without the Lord’s guidance. But if we walk in the Word of Jesus . . . well, look what happened to Simon Peter!

THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Terry & Rhonda Harbaugh to the glory of God on the occasion of their wedding anniversary.

VOTERS’ ASSEMBLY TOMORROW. . . Monday, July 17, at 7:30 pm. Just a reminder that all reports are due to Leigh Ann by 8:00 am tomorrow morning. Thank you!

CIRCUIT CONVOCATION! . . . The Mattoon Circuit of the Central Illinois District is celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation at our first ever Circuit Convocation on Saturday, August 5, at Saint John Lutheran Church, Mattoon. The celebration begins with 9:00 am Divine Service and includes lunch, supper, and an opportunity for the congregations of the circuit to share how they are doing. The night winds up with a presentation on Luther sites in Germany. Please sign up in the back of the church or let Pastor Braaten know if you are planning to attend.

PROVIDING ARTILLERY FOR THE CHURCH MILITANT ON THE FRONT LINES…Issues, Etc. is a radio talk show hosted by LCMS Pastor Todd Wilken and produced by Lutheran Public Radio in Collinsville, IL.  This week’s teachings include:  Raising Children in an Age of Relativism, Martin Luther’s Sacristy Prayer, The Parable of the Weeds, Achnan’s Sin, Elijah, Ezekiel, Mary Magdalene and more.  You can listen to what you want when you want at www.issuesetc.org and on the Lutheran Public Radio mobile app.

DIET OF WORMS . . . Yuck…How did Luther get so fat? Luther obviously didn’t stick to his diet. A Diet was an imperial meeting of the Holy Roman Empire. Official business was conducted that changed things throughout the empire. Luther was called to the Diet that took place in Worms, Germany. There, he was told to say he recanted of what he wrote and taught. Luther responded that he could not in good conscience deny his writings because they proclaim the truth of the Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ. Here I stand.
