THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Exodus 34:29–35; 2 Peter 1:16–21; Matthew 17:1–9.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . In Jonah we see ourselves. For Jonah fled from the presence of the Lord (Jonah 1:1–17) even as we sinners turn our backs on God and go our own way. This brings the storm of God’s judgment. But in Jonah we also see Christ. For even as he was in the great fish for three days and three nights, so also Christ Jesus was buried in the depths of death for us and raised on the third day. The Lord of creation, who rules over the wind and the wave (Matt. 8:23–27), saved us from the fury of divine wrath by taking the judgment in His own body. His love is the fulfillment of the Law (Rom. 13:8–10). Though our faith be weak in the face of peril, yet we are kept in safety on the ship of the Church; for the Son of God is with us. Though the whole creation groans with us under the curse, yet by Jesus’ speaking, there is a great calm. For we know that our present sufferings are not worthy to be compared with the glory to be revealed in us (Rom. 8:18–23).

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . Matthew 8:26–27 And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Jesus diagnoses the disciples’ fear as being caused by a lack of faith in Him. Indeed, every one of our temptations to sin is really about our faith—will we trust the Lord or not? It’s the same with our stewardship—will we trust the Lord’s Word when it comes to supporting the Lord’s ministry, or will our lives be dictated by fear and a lack of trust in God’s provision?

THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . were given by Greg & Donna Campbell to the glory of God on the occasion of Gunnar’s baptismal birthday (February 1).

BI-MONTHLY MISSION . . . is today, Sunday, February 3, and will be going to the Tuscola Area Ministerial Alliance (TAMA). For your convenience, an envelope designated for TAMA has been placed in your church mailbox. You may place cash or check payable to Immanuel in this envelope. Thank you!

COMPUTER SKILLS NEEDED . . . Immanuel is looking for a volunteer who has basic computer skills to transfer our recorded weekly Sunday Divine Service from our Tascam recorder to the CDs that go out to our homebound members. Leigh Ann will continue to record the services from the organ loft. Instructions are available and Leigh Ann will be happy to step any volunteer through the simple process. If you are interested, please let Pastor know. Thank you!

A NEW ADULT INFORMATION CLASS . . . will begin next Sunday, February 10, 6:00 pm. All the main teachings of the Bible will be studied. If you know of someone who is interested in this class, perhaps a husband or wife, a neighbor, or someone from work, please invite them to attend. If you have not attended since confirmation or when you became a member, please consider joining us for some rewarding Bible study. For more information, contact Pastor.

MATTOON CIRCUIT VISITOR . . . will be here at Immanuel on Sunday, February 10, 2:00–5:00 pm. Rev. John Sharp will be here to visit with members, boards, and committees to examine the steadfast preaching and teaching of Pastor Braaten and the unity and fellowship within Immanuel. All are invited to come. Pastor Sharp is interested in talking with not only the Church Council and the Board of Elders, but also each one of us as members who are to care for one another and build each other up in Christian service and fellowship.

THE FINANCIAL REVIEW COMMITTEE . . . is requesting the deposit ledgers and bank statements of all groups associated with Immanuel so that they may be reviewed as mandated by the church constitution. They may be set in the church office.

THANK YOU . . . for the reception, the cards, and the well wishes. I am truly humbled and am thankful to have been able to serve Immanuel in this way—Leigh Ann.
