THE ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Isaiah 40:25–31; 1 Peter 2:11–20; John 16:16–22.

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS . . . Numbers 21:4–9; James 1:22–27; John 16:23–30.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S READINGS . . . Though Jesus has departed from us visibly to the right hand of the Father who sent Him, yet this is to our advantage. For Jesus—who is Lord over all creation, who intercedes for us before the Father, who is preparing a place for us in heaven—has sent the Helper, the Spirit of Truth (John 16:5–15). “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights” through Jesus Christ (James 1:17). The Holy Spirit helps us by taking what is Christ’s and declaring it to us. In the Word of truth, the Spirit works repentance and delivers to us the forgiveness of sins, the righteousness of Christ, and victory over the devil. For the ruler of this world is judged and defeated by the cross. Through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, we have been brought forth to new life in Him who is the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. Confident of our resurrection with Christ we confess, “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid” (Is. 12:2).

THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP . . . James 1:17—“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” How often this thought is repeated in the Scriptures! Everything good we have is from God. He loves to give. He loves to bless. He loves to show us generosity time and again – and He desires that we grow into His image, and reflect His love.

THE ALTAR FLOWERS . . . are given by Dave & Michelle Stumeier to the glory of God on the occasion of Janet Stumeier’s birthday and in recognition of Immanuel’s mothers on Mother’s Day.

CARNATIONS FOR THE LADIES OF IMMANUEL . . . We welcome the opportunity this weekend to celebrate all the ladies of Immanuel for all you do for us and all those around you. Please be sure to pick up a carnation as you leave today.

ENJOY DELICIOUS PIZZAS, PASTA, AND SANDWICHES . . . on Monday, May 15, 2017, and Tuscola Monical’s will donate 20% of your guest check to Immanuel’s Board of Education. Just think—you will be raising money by going to Monical’s to eat! Flyers are in your mailboxes. Thank you for supporting the Board of Education.

INCREASE IN ALTAR FLOWER COST . . . The cost of altar flowers has risen from $34.00 to $35.00 per weekend. Thank you!

SUMMER MEALS PROGRAM FOR KIDS . . . through the Douglas County Health Department is asking local churches to consider helping by providing 3 volunteers per day for one week (Monday–Friday, 8:00–12:00) during June or July. Volunteer activities would include greeting the kids when they arrive, helping them with activities, setting out food (no cooking required!), and helping them gather up their things before they leave. The program is held at the Tuscola United Methodist Church. If you are interested and want more information, let either Deborah Reifsteck or Leigh Ann Whitson know. This is a great outreach opportunity for Immanuel!

READ LIKE A LUTHERAN . . . Concordia Publishing House’s summer reading program begins on May 27. Read Christ-centered books and earn a chance to win prizes! See the bulletin insert or visit cph.org/read for more information.

CAMP CILCA SCHOLARSHIP . . . The Board of Missions and Evangelism is offering a scholarship for anyone who wants to attend Camp CILCA. Camp CILCA Summer 2017 brochures can be found on the table across from member mailboxes. Please notify Pastor Braaten or Deborah Reifsteck of your interest.

CENTRAL ILLINOIS DISTRICT SCHOLARSHIP SUNDAY . . . was last Sunday, May 7. We thank everyone who participated with gifts and prayers in support of our C.I.D. seminarians and full-time church worker students. We ask that you continue to pray for the needs of our students throughout the year. The need is great.  If you were not able to make a gift last week you may send a check payable to “The CID Scholarship Endowment Fund” and send it to the Central Illinois District LC-MS, 1850 North Grand Avenue West, Springfield, IL 62702-1626. Offering envelopes are available through Immanuel’s church office.

A PRAYER FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT . . . Almighty God, send Your Holy Spirit into our hearts that He may rule and direct us according to Your will, comfort us in all our temptations and afflictions, defend us from all error, and lead us into all truth that we, being steadfast in faith, may increase in all good works and in the end obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
