God is with us in Word and Sacrament

An Update from the Naumann Family in Sri Lanka

“I am the Good Shepherd.”

The words that you may hear this coming Sunday for your Gospel reading came to my mind frequently after the terrorist attacks of Easter Day:

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

It has been fascinating this week especially to see such opposite advice given: the Roman Catholic Cardinal has told all Catholic churches and schools to remain closed, while the Anglican Bishop has urged that all churches, even those that closed last Sunday, should hold their services this Sunday.

Our Lutheran Church is following the example of the Good Shepherd, as last week, and continuing services.

Colombo City is also slowly returning to its normal, high-traffic ways. Our children’s school is also planning to resume soon. Businesses are opening back up, though there are far fewer foreigners and tourists than before, which will be very difficult for many families—so many livelihoods have been lost. Thank you to all of you who have been praying for our safety recently. Please continue your prayers for the people, peace and prosperity of Sri Lanka.
